May delivered a number of hockey autographs that fall outside of the NHL collection. This post features 19 NHL autographs and a further 26 autoraphs that fall into my other hockey autograph collections. With 19 new NHL signatures the grand total now stands at 6,122 unique NHL signatures for 80% of everyone to ever play in the league.

The highlight of this month's mail has to be landing a Jaroslav Otevrel autograph. Someone had listed a bunch of lots of in person signed 1990s cards by team on ebay. Only one lot caught my eye, the San Jose Sharks lot, and that was thanks to just one card. There was pretty much only a two year window to get Otevrel's autographs, when he was in North America from 1992-1994 and he spent most of that time in the minors. He was paralyzed in 1996 so hasn't been able to sign anything since then. I was born in 1991 and I'm getting close to having an autograph of everyone to play in the NHL during my lifetime.  From the hundreds and hundreds of NHL debuts from 1990-2015, I'm left with only 25 players to find. Of those 25, and with Otevrel now found, I only have two left that I know I'll have to get lucky to find - Igor Vyazmikin and Dmitri Tertyshny. Both players were in North America only briefly and both are now deceased. The other 23 players I'm confident that I'll eventually be able to land with persistence, if not by TTM then on an old program or card. Vyazmikin, however, doesn't even have a hockey card to his name. Pretty much my only hope is finding some kind of team signed item from the 1990/91 Cape Breton Oilers, and who knows have many, if any, of those are floating around.

                   Jaroslav Otevrel
Czech forward Jaroslav Otevrel was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1991. From 1992-1994 he played 16 games in the NHL with the Sharks, scoring 3 goals and 7 points. He returned to Europe for the 1994/95 season and played in Finland until 1996. During a game in 1996, he fell awkwardly into another player and suffered a career ending injury that paralyzed him from the neck down.

After hanging up his skates, Gillis earned his law degree and became a successful agent. Those connections later landed him the job of Vancouver Canucks GM, a position he held from 2008 to 2014.

It was a great month for vintage signatures. A couple autographs came from a 1952 Galt BlackHawks OHA junior hockey program signed by a few players, 2 of which I needed. Finding 'toughies' on old programs like that gives me hope in eventually finding some of the most obscure guys. A couple other of these vintage signatures (Henderson and Lamirande) come all the way from Russia, signed while they traveled as members of Canada's World Championship team.

The month saw 25 new NHL player signatures added to the collection for a total of 6,261 unique NHL autographs, or 82% of everyone to play in the league.

                       Frank Finnigan (d. 1991)
Frank Finnigan was a star NHL player with the 1920s Ottawa Senators and spent time as team captain. He won the Stanley Cup in 1927 with the Ottawa Senators and in 1932 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

From 1944 to 1952 defenseman Frank Eddolls played over 300 NHL games between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. He won the Stanley Cup with the 1946 Canadiens. He was head coach of the AHL's Buffalo Bisons when he passed away at just 40 in 1961.

                   Leo Lamoureux (d. 1961)
Defenseman Leo Lamoureux was a member of the Montreal Canadiens from 1942 to 1947. He won the Stanley Cup with the Habs in 1944 and 1946.

                            John Henderson
John Henderson played 45 NHL games with the 1954/55 Boston Bruins as an NHL rookie. He played 1 more NHL game the following season and that was the extent of his big league career. He continued playing in the minors until 1970. He represented Canada at the 1958 World Championships, winning Gold. I was never able to locate him post hockey career so was very happy to find this goalie.

                  Jean-Paul Lamirande (d. 1976)
From 1946 to 1955 Jean Lamirande played 49 regular season games in the NHL. He played all but one with the New York Rangers, dressing his last NHL game with the Montreal Canadiens. He won Gold at the 1958 World Championships with Canada.

                   Mike Buchanan (d. 2017)
Defenseman Mike Buchanan played 1 NHL game with the 1951/52 Chicago Blackhawks. Unlike today's players, Buchanan went on to play in the NCAA with the University of Michigan only after he played pro and in the NHL.

                         Jim McBurney
Jim McBurney recorded 1 assist in his only career NHL game with the 1952/53 Chicago Blackhawks. Called up from junior, it was his only professional hockey game. McBurney is still alive and I've unsuccessfully tried writing to him a few times over the years. I find it interesting that even though he's been around so long, the autograph I acquired here would have been signed during his first year as a junior hockey player, at the very start of his career.

From 1931 to 1937 Lorne Duguid played 135 games in the NHL. He played for the Montreal Maroons, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins.

From 1930 to 1940 Johnny Gagnon scored 120 goals and 261 points in 454 career regular season NHL games. He spent the majority of that time with the Montreal Canadiens but he also had stints with the Boston Bruins and New York Americans. Gagnon won the Stanley Cup in 1931 with Montreal.

October, 2019 saw 9 new NHL player autographs added to the collection, raising the grand total to 6,270 unique player signatures, 82% of everyone to ever play in the league.
The month was highlighted by a few great TTM returns, particularly Rich Parent.

                          Rich Parent
I'd long been searching for Rich Parent's autograph so I was thrilled to get this return. From 1997 to 2001 Rich Parent played in 32 NHL games between the St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins.
With Parent now added, Brian Eklund is the very last goalie from the past 35 years of NHL debuts who I have left to find. I'm pretty sure I know Eklund's location, but unfortunately he doesn't seem to answer fan mail. The addition of Parent also completes the 1997/98 season of debuts for me.

                          Dave Reid (b. 1934)
From 1952 to 1956 Dave Reid played 7 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. There is another, much more well known Dave Reid, who also played in the NHL more recently and with the Maple Leafs. That make it next to impossible to locate this Dave Reid so I was lucky to find his signature on an old program. When I looked through the program I was even happier to see that it was from one of those 7 games Reid played in the NHL.
He goes with the 1952/53 NHL debuts.

                           Dean Morton
Dean Morton scored a goal in his one and only career NHL game with the 1989/90 Detroit Red Wings. He later returned to the NHL, but in a different uniform. Morton has been an NHL official since 2000, refereeing well over 800 NHL games so far.
The addition of Morton's signatures leaves me with 1 player left to complete the 1989/90 year of debuts.

                         Pavel Torgayev
Russian forward Pavel Torgayev was 29 when he played his first NHL season with the 1995/96 Calgary Flames. From 1996 to 2000 he scored 6 goals and 20 points in 55 career NHL games between the Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning. Internationally, he represented Russia at the 1994 Olympics and 1995 World Championships.
After years of never getting a success from Russia, I've gotten a few great returns this year. I've long been after Torgayev and his signature completes the 1995/96 season of debuts.

                  Brian White
Defenseman Brian White played 2 NHL games with the 1998/99 Colorado Avalanche. He was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in '94 and spent four seasons at the University of Maine before signing with the Avalanche.
White leaves me with one player left to complete the 1998/99 year of debuts.

               Jean-Guy Lagace
From 1968 to 1976 Jean-Guy Lagace played 197 regular season games in the NHL, dressing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Kanas City Scouts. He also played a season in the WHA with the 1976/77 Birmingham Bulls.
This was my first time using the Past Pros service. It was the only way I could get Lagace's signature but the service worked as advertised and I'm satisfied.
Lagace's autographs puts the 1968/69 year of debuts at 91%.

                        Mush March
From 1928 to 1945 Mush March was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, playing 759 regular season NHL games with the club. He won the Stanley Cup in 1934 and 1938 with Chicago and in '34 he scored the Cup winning overtime goal.
March goes with my other vintage, 1917-1940, autographs.

                            Claude Verret
From 1983 to 1985 Claude Verret scored 2 goals and 7 points in 14 career NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres. I had tried writing to Verret a few times before but always seemed to just miss him at his location. I was finally able to catch up with him.
Verret is added to the 1983/84 year of debuts.

                      Jaycob Megna
From 2017 to 2019 defenseman Jaycob Megna played 43 games in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks. He was recently signed by the Vegas Golden Knights but has yet to play for the team. His brother, Jayson, also played in the NHL.
I sent out a number of requests to current NHL and mostly AHL players recently with Megna being the first return. I'm hoping to have a better year from the AHL this season. Megna goes with the 2016/17  year of debuts.

----------------------------------------

                          Tommy Ivan
From 1947 to 1954 Tommy Ivan was head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, winning the Stanley Cup in 1950, 1952 and 1954. From 1954 to 1977 he was General Manager of the Chicago Blackhawks, winning another Stanley Cup in 1961. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1974.
Ivan and the next few signatures here go with my collection of NHL coaches and GMs who didn't play in the NHL.

                    Dave Hakstol
From 2015 to 2018 Dave Hakstol was head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. He's been an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs since 2019. He played some pro hockey in the 90s and was a long time coach of the the University of North Dakota before entering the NHL.

                    Randy Sexton
Randy Sexton has spent time as General Manager of the Ottawa Senators (93-96) and Florida Panthers (09/10). He's currently assistant GM of the Buffalo Sabres. Sexton served as Director of Amateur Scouting of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2010 to 2017 and has his name engraved on the Stanley Cup with the Pens.

                    Tom McVie
Tom McVie spent time as an NHL Head Coach with the Washington Capitals (1975 to 1979), Winnipeg Jets (1979 to 1980) and New Jersey Devils (1991 to 1992). Before becoming a coach, Tom McVie spent nearly 2 decades as a pro hockey player, mostly in the WHL. He sent me an absolutely wonderful return with a bunch of extras.

                            Ron Fournier
Ron Fournier spent a decade as an NHL official. He also spent a few years officiating in the WHA. He's now well known in Quebec as a sports radio personality.

                          Sandra Whyte
Sandra Whyte won Gold at the 1998 Olympics with the Team USA Women's hockey team. She also has a number of Silver medals from the Women's World Championships. Whyte goes with my growing collection of Canadian and American female hockey Olympians and pros.

                             John Kiely
John Kiley played 1 season in the WHA, dressing in 22 games with the 1975/76 Cincinnati Stingers. Special thanks to John for sending me back such a wonderful letter as well.
Kiely and Keogan go into my WHA only collection.

            Jim Johannson (d. 2018)
Another one of my side collections is modern US/Canadian hockey Olympians who never made the NHL. Johannson played a few seasons of pro in the IHL but is most notable for being a member of USA's 1988 and 1992 Olympic hockey teams. In 2018, he was GM of the Olympic team but sadly passed away suddenly the same year.

                   Derek Lalonde
Derek Lalonde started his coaching career in 2003 with Ferris State University as an assistant coach. From 2006 to 2011 he held the same position with the University of Denver. In 2011 he was promoted to head coach with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers and in 2014 he was again promoted to head coach of the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. In 2016 he rose up the ranks to the AHL and in 2018 Lalonde made his way to the top as a assistant coach with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.

                    Mike Haviland
Mike Haviland was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1990 and played a little professional hockey but never made it to the NHL. From 2008 to 2012 he was an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks. He has his name engraved on the Stanley Cup with the 2010 Hawks. Since 2014 he's been head coach of Colorado College.
Haviland and Lalonde are added to my collection of NHL coaches and GMs who did not play in the league.

                    Bill Chadwick
Bill Chadwick was an NHL official from 1939 to 1955, the first American born official in league history. He later spent 14 years a as a color commentator with the New York Rangers. Chadwick was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964.

                       Emily Clark
Emily Clark has represented Canada at 4 World Championships and the 2018 Olympics.
Clark and the next couple autographs go with my Women of Hockey in Autographs collection.

                     Loren Gabel
A Clarkson University alumni, Loren Gabel represented Canada at the 2019 World Championships.

               Jaime Bourbonnais
Currently a member of Cornell, Jaime Bourbonnais represented Canada at the 2019 World Championships. Her grandfather, Roger Bourbonnais, was a hockey player who twice represented Canada at the Olympics.

                             Sarah Tueting
Sarah Tueting won Gold at the 1998 Olympics and Silver at the 2002 Olympics with Team USA.

                                 Ron Piche
I picked up this Ron Piche autograph to display with his old baseball card that has a neat picture of a hockey player, noting Piche's connection to the game. This and the next coupe of signatures are added to my very unique Baseball-Hockey autograph collection.

                                Tony La Russa

                                      Dan Plesac

                                    Doug Pederson
Pederson goes with my other Football-Hockey autographs.

Sharing another aspect of my hockey autograph collection: referees and linesman of the NHL. This page has been added to the main collection page and will be continuously updated, as are my other collection pages.
This little collection is a favorite of mine. I have tremendous respect for these individuals.  Unfortunately, I've found it challenging reaching former/current officials for autographs.

December, 2019 saw 7 new NHL signatures arrive in the mail. The total of unique NHL player autographs in my collections now stands at 6,424.

In addition to this mail post, December saw a little housekeeping get done and I've posted the 2017/18 year of debuts as well as my NHL officials autographs.

                      Irv Spencer (d. 1999)
From 1959 to 1968 Irv Spencer played 230 regular season NHL games between the Rangers, Bruins and Red Wings. From 1972 to 1974 he also played 73 games in the WHA with the Philadelphia/Vancouver Blazers.

                   Grant Warwick (d. 1999)
Grant Warwick played nearly 400 games in the NHL and is most notable for winning the 1942 Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. He was also an NHL All-Star in 1947. Internationally, he's also notable for winning Gold at the 1955 World Championships. His brother, Bill, also played in the NHL.

                           Tim Sheehy
During the 1970's, Tim Sheehy played over 400 games in the WHA between the New England Whalers, Birmingham Bulls and Edmonton Oilers. From 1977 to 1980 he played 27 games in the NHL between the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers. Internationally, Sheehy won Silver at the 1972 Olympics with the United States.

                        Florent Robidoux
From 1980 to 1984 Florent Robidoux scored 7 goals and 11 points in 52 career NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks.

                            John Miner
John Miner scored 2 goals and 5 points in 14 career NHL games with the 1987/88 Edmonton Oilers. He was carried as a reserved during the playoffs when Gretzky's Oilers captured the '88 Stanley Cup but it wasn't enough for Miner to get his name on the Cup. He's also notable for being part of the trade that sent Gretzky to the Kings.

                        Dale Rominski
I was thrilled to get this one back. I've tried sending to Rominski a number of times of the years and this one was at an addresses I'd tried a couple times before. Finally got in touch with him (Thanks again Dale!!) and added the last autograph I needed to complete the 1999/00 season of debuts. Rominski was an undrafted University of Michigan grad who played just 2 seasons of pro hockey, including 3 NHL games with the 1999/2000 Tampa Bay Lightning.

                   Bob Janecyk
During the 1980s Bob Janecyk backstopped over 100 NHL games between the Chicago Blackhawks and LA Kings. He's been a scout with the Ottawa Senators for the past two decades.

---------

                          Larry Israelson
A Notre Dame alumni, Larry Islraelson scored 22 goals and 53 points in 105 career WHA games between the Vancouver Blazers and Calgary Cowboys. Isrealson goes into my collection of players who played in the WHA but not the NHL.

                          Angela Ruggiero
Angela Ruggiero is one of hockey's most notable female players. She's a four time Olympic medalist who was a long time member of USA's International team. She briefly played for the CHL's Tulsa Oilers in 2004/05, a men's professional hockey team. That makes her the second female other than Haley Wickenheiser to play a forward/defense position in men's pro hockey. She was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. This goes into my collection of female hockey player autographs.

                            Mike Hasenfratz
A one time police officer and private investigator, Mike Hansenfratz has been a regular NHL referee since 2000.

                                Roger Haggerty
Roger Haggerty spent four seasons playing professional baseball in the Boston Red Sox organization. His son, Ryan Haggerty, is a pro hockey player who is in his 6th year in the AHL. This goes with my surprisingly large collection of baseball player signatures with a hockey connection.

January, 2020 saw 29 new NHL signatures arrive in the mail. My TTM returns lately have not been stellar but I have had success in finding some of the older, deceased guys. The grand total of unique NHL player signatures now stands at 6,453 for 83% of everyone to ever play in the NHL. Thanks everyone I dealt with this month, especially to Phil!

                         Toe Blake (d. 1995)
A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Toe Blake has his name engraved on the Stanley Cup 11 times. Blake was a star player, a member of the Punch Line with Elmer Lach and Maurice Richard. Blake later became a very successful coach with the Canadiens.

              Jim Bedard (d. 1994)
Not to be confused with the goalie, this Jim Bedard, born in 1927, played 22 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks during the early 1950s. The signature didn't scan well but its actually very clear in person.

                         Ralph Nattrass (d. 1994)
From 1946 to 1950 defenseman Ralph Nattrass played over 200 games in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks.

                          Stan Smrke (d. 1977)
Stan Smrke played 9 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1950s. He spent most of his professional hockey career in the AHL with the Rochester Americans.

                    Bucko McDonald (d. 1991)
From 1934 to 1945 Bucko McDonald played 448 regular season games in the NHL. He was a member of the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers. He won the Stanley Cup in 1936, 1937 and 1942. He later spent time as a member of the Canadian Parliament.

                     Jack McDonald (d. 1990)
John "Jack" McDonald played 1 season, 43 games, in the NHL with the 1943/44 New York Rangers. He scored 10 goals and 19 points.

                        Ken McAuley (d. 1992)
Ken McAuley spent 2 seasons as starting goalie of the New York Rangers. From 1943 to 1945 he played 96 games in the NHL with New York.

                         Red Almas (d. 2001)
Red Almas appeared in 3 total NHL games. 1 with the 1946/47 Red Wings, 1 with the 1950/51 Blackhawks and 1 with the 1952/53 Red Wings. He spent most of his career was a starter in the AHL.

                       Fern Gauthier (d. 1992)
During the 1940s Fern Gauthier played over 200 games in the NHL between the Rangers, Canadiens and Red Wings.

                        Buzz Boll (d. 1990)
From 1933 to 1944 Buzz Boll played 436 regular season games in the NHL. He scored 133 goals and 263 points between the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York/Brooklyn Americans and Boston Bruins.

                       Walt Atanas (d. 1991)
Walt Atanas played 1 season in the NHL. He scored 13 goals and 21 points in 49 NHL games with the New York Rangers.

                             Wayne Hall
Wayne Hall played 4 games in the NHL with the 1960/61 New York Rangers.

                          Robbie Holland
From 1979 to 1981 goalie Robbie Holland played 44 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

                             Roger Pelletier
Roger Pelletier played 1 game in the NHL with the 1967/68 Philadelphia Flyers. He spent nearly a decade in the AHL as a pro hockey player.

                        Ken Yaremchuk
From 1983 to 1989 Ken Yaremchuk scored 92 points in 235 career regular season NHL games between the Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs. Internationally, he represented Canada at the 1988 Olympics.

                       Ron Anderson b. 1950
There were two players by the name of Ron Anderson who played in the NHL during the 1970s. This Ron Anderson scored 9 goals and 16 points in 28 NHL games with the 1974/75 Washington Capitals.

                    Jacques Deslauriers (d. 2018)
Jacques Deslauriers played 2 games in the NHL with the 1955/56 Montreal Canadiens.

                  Gordie Bruce (d. 1997)
From 1940 to 1946 Gordon "Gordie" Bruce played 28 regular season and 7 playoff games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins.

               Paul Terbenche (d. 2012)
From 1967 to 1974 Paul Terbenche played 189 games in the NHL, dressing for the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres. He then went on to play nearly 300 games in the WHA.

                               Jim Mayer
Jim Mayer played 4 games in the NHL with the 1979/80 New York Rangers. Before that, he played 74 games in the WHA, dressing for the Calgary Cowboys, New England Whalers and Edmonton Oilers.

                             Bob Kabel (d. 2016)
From 1959 to 1961 Bob Kabel scored 5 goals and 18 points in 48 NHL games with the New York Rangers. He had a long pro hockey career in the WHL and AHL.

                        Ron Talakoski (d. 2009)
Ron Talakoski played 8 games in the NHL with the New York Rangers during the 1980s.

                        Mikko Leinonen
From 1981 to 1985 Mikko Leinonen scored 109 points in 162 NHL games. He spent most of that time with the New York Rangers but also briefly played for the Washington Capitals. Over his career he represented Finland at the World Junior Championships, World Championships, Olympics and Canada Cup.

              Steve Smith (born 1963)
During the 1980s this particular Steve Smith played 18 games in the NHL between the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres. Not to be confused with the much more famous Steve Smith, who was also a defenseman and played in the NHL around the same time. That, and the fact that Steve Smith is such a common name, made this signature a challenge to find.

                          Bill McDougall
From 1990 to 1994 Bill McDougall played 28 games in the NHL, scoring 5 goals and 10 points. He played for the Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning. He had a very interesting career and is known for his record setting performance during the 1993 AHL playoffs. He scored an incredible 26 goals and 52 points in just 16 games, leading his team to the Calder Cup.

                         Wade Skolney
An undrafted defenseman, Wade Skolney played 1 game in the NHL with the 2005/06 Philadelphia Flyers. Skolney was the last player I needed to complete the 2005/2006 Season in Autographs, one of the most significant years of debuts in league history.

                  Francis Belanger
Francis Belanger played 10 games in the NHL with the 2000/2001 Montreal Canadiens. He tallied 0 points but posted 29 penalty minutes. Belanger was the last player I needed to complete the 2000/2001 Season in Autographs.

                  Wally Schreiber
From 1987 to 1989 Wally Schreiber scored 8 goals and 18 points in 41 NHL games with the Minnesota North Stars. He's most notable for representing Canada at the Olympics in 1988, 1992 and 1994.

                           Jake Dotchin
Defenseman Jake Dotchin has played just over 100 games in the NHL between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Anaheim Ducks.

---------------------------------------------------------------
                  Cory Clouston
From 2009 to 2011 Cory Clouston was Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators.

                          Sasha Pokulok
One of my more recent side projects is collecting NHL first rounders who never played in the NHL. I decided to start collecting them because they do have a notable piece of hockey history, as a team's first round pick in any given year is usually very notable. Futhermore, the large majority of them do play in the NHL.

                                         Dick Littlefield (d. 1997)
I pair this Dick Littlefied autograph with the card show next to it that mentions he was "also a good amateur hockey player." A pitcher, Littlefield spent 9 years in the majors. This goes with my baseball-hockey autograph collection.

                                        Glenn Kulka
Glenn Kulka was predominantly a professional football player in the CFL and a professional wrestler in the WWF. He also played junior hockey in the WHL and then had a brief pro career in the ECHL. What I find interesting is that he came back to hockey to play in the ECHL after almost a decade of being a CFL player. He was a huge guy so he would have been quite the sight on skates. A fascinating career. This goes with my collection of football-hockey autographs.

I've been extremely lucky as of late to be making some great connections in the hobby. These connections (and the wonderful people they represent) have allowed me to add some autographs I thought I might never see. Its been great fun adding so many vintage signatures and getting a connection to another generation. Recent TTM returns have not been stellar so the vintage pickups have more than made up for it.
Huge thanks to Adam for hooking me up with a Richard Scott signature, I'd long been after his autograph. From 2000 to 2010 I now only need Josh Olson and Dave Morisset to complete to the decade of debuts.

45 new autographs added this month raise the grand total of unique NHL player signatures to 6,498 for 84% of everyone to ever play in the league.

                            Bill Kyle (d. 1968)
From 1949-1951 William Kyle scored 3 points in 3 career NHL games with the New York Rangers. All 3 of those points came in his 1 game with the 1950/51 Rangers. That gives him a somewhat notable NHL record for the best single season points per game average. His brother, Gus, also played in the NHL.

                        Sam LoPresti (d. 1984)
Sam LoPresti is a truly remarkable person. He spent a couple years in the NHL as Chicago's starting goalie. In 1941, he set an NHL record with the Blackhawks, facing 83 shots in a single NHL game against the Boston Bruins. He stopped 80 of them. In WWII, LoPresti served in the US Navy and was stranded at sea for over 40 days. He is credited with saving many of his 28 shipmates by catching a dolphin, their only food during the ordeal. When his son, Pete, later played in the NHL, they became the first father-son goalies in league history.

                        Alex Levinsky (d. 1990)
Defenseman Alex Levinsky played in the NHL throughout the 1930s, suiting up for the Maple Leafs, Rangers and Blackhawks. He won the Stanley Cup in 1932 with Toronto and in 1938 with Chicago.

                         Bill MacKenzie (d. 1990)
From 1933 to 1940 defenseman Bill MacKenzie played 230 NHL games between the Montreal Maroons, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks. He won the Stanley Cup in 1938 with Chicago.

                             Joe Junkin (d. 2014)
Joe Junkin played 1 NHL game with the 1968/69 Boston Bruins. He later spent a couple seasons in the WHA.

                            Ken Kilrea (d. 1990)
From 1939 to 1944 Ken Kilrea scored 16 goals and 39 points in 88 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings. He had two brothers, Hec and Wally, who also played in the NHL.

                       Ray Kinsella (d. 1996)
Ray Kinsella played 13 games in the NHL with the 1930/31 Ottawa Senators. He's perhaps most notable for being one of the original Senators who was alive and able to attend the team's 1992 ceremonies when the team once again returned to the NHL.

                            Nick Metz (d. 1990)
From 1934 to 1948 Nick Metz played over 500 games in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played in 8 Stanley Cup finals and won the Cup 4 times. His brother, Don, also played for the Leafs.

                          Bert McInenly (d. 1993)
From 1930 to 1936 Bert McInenly played 166 games in the NHL, suiting up with the Detroit Falcons, New York Americans, Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins.

                 Byron "Butch" McDonald (d. 2006)
Butch McDonald scored 8 goals and 28 points in 66 career NHL games between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.

                       Smiley Meronek (d. 1999)
From 1939 to 1943 William 'Smiley' Meronek scored 5 goals and 13 points in 19 career NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens.

                        Jack McIntyre (d. 1998)
From 1949 to 1960 Jack McIntyre played 499 regular season NHL games, dressing for the Bruins, Blackhawks and Red Wings.

                          Eddie Kullman (d. 1997)
From 1947 to 1954 defenseman Ed Kullman posted 56 goals and 126 points in 343 career NHL games with the New York Rangers.

                      Arnie Kullman (d. 1999)
From 1947 to 1950 Arnie Kullman played 13 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins.

                             Pat Lundy (d. 1999)
From 1945 to 1951 Pat Lundy played 150 NHL games between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks.

                          Bryan Lefley (d. 1997)
From 1972 to 1978 Bryan Lefley played over 200 NHL games. He suited up for the New York Islanders, Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. His brother, Chuck, also played in the NHL.

                     Ralph MacSweyn (d. 1995)
From 1967 to 1972 defenseman Ralph MacSweyn played 47 games in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. He later played a couple seasons in the WHA, dressing for the Los Angeles Sharks and Vancouver Blazers.

                        Ray Manson (d. 2004)
Ray Manson played 1 NHL game with the 1947/48 Boston Bruins and 1 NHL game with the 1948/49 New York Rangers.

                       Calum MacKay (d. 2001)
From 1946 to 1955 Calum "Baldy" MacKay played over 200 games in the NHL between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens. He helped Montreal win the Stanley Cup in 1953.

                            Bill Nyrop (d.1995)
Nyrop had an interesting career. His father was a big time airlines executive and Nyrop grew up a star quarterback. He was good enough for the University of Notre Dame football team but an injury set his sights on hockey instead. After graduating from Notre Dame, he joined the Canadiens and went on to win 3 Stanley Cups in just 3 seasons before retiring to study law. He returned to the NHL 4 years later for his 4th and final season, this time with the Minnesota North Stars. He was only 43 when he died from cancer.

                         Paul Nicholson (d. 2011)
From 1974 to 1977 Paul Nicholson played 62 NHL games with the Washington Capitals.

                      George Morrison (d. 2008)

                     Don Martineau (d. 2006)
From 1973 to 1977 Don Martineau played 90 games in the NHL between the Atlanta Flames, Minnesota North Stars and Detroit Red Wings.

                         Bill Knibbs (d. 2006)
Bill Knibbs spent 1 season in the NHL, scoring 7 goals and 17 points in 53 games with the 1964/65 Boston Bruins.

                         Roger Lafreniere (d. 2009)

March, 2020 saw 34 new NHL autographs arrive in the mail. The majority of which came early in the month, before the world was paralyzed. Due to corona and the economic uncertainties it brings, the next couple months of mail will be smaller than usual. I've largely stopped sending anything. Our mail carriers have enough to deal with right now so I'll be saving my letters until this is over.

The grand total of unique NHL signatures in my collection now stands at 6,532 for 84% of everyone to ever play in the league.

To save money, I only get it sent to me in Canada when I have a few items waiting and that happend to be this past month. This month proved to be a good month for vintage signatures. Most of my modern player signatures, on certified cards, remain stuck in my COMC.com account. Once those come in, I'll have a whole new season of debuts to add to the blog. In a normal year, this would also be about the time I'd start getting returns from AHL/current players. I did send a few requests to Europe this past week but its difficult to get current players at the moment.

With 21 new NHL player signatures added this month, the grand total stands at 6,788 unique autographs for 87% of everyone to ever play in the NHL.
