53 new autographs brings the grand total of unique NHL signatures to 4,362

You may of noticed, I did update the blog's format a little

New: Follow me on Twitter!

Ron Stewart
Ron Stewart played 1,353 regular season games in the NHL between 1952 and 1973. He won the Stanley Cup 3 times as a Toronto Maple Leaf. He later returned to the NHL as a head coach with the Rangers and LA Kings. Stewart passed away in 2012 and this is his only certified autograph card. I also got my hands on a Sid Smith from the same set but that was just an upgrade, not a new autograph, so I won't be showing it off on this post.

Rick Martin
What a beautiful looking autograph Rick Martin has. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago at only 59. Martin was a 7 time NHL All-Star with the Buffalo Sabres and scored 50+ goals a season twice. He was a member of the famous French Connection line with Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert.

Mark Johnson
With this and the Eric Strobel in this post I now have a certified signature of every member of the 1980 USA Miracle team. Mark Johnson was one of the best players of the Gold medal winning team. He scored 500+ points in the NHL, was an NHL All-Star and served as captain of the Hartford Whalers.

Brian Engblom
Brian Engblom made his NHL debut in the playoffs with the 1976/77 Montreal Canadiens. The team won the Stanley Cup but with only 2 games played Engblom's name was left off the trophy. That wasn't the case in 1978 and 1979 when became a full time Canadien and won the Stanley Cup both years. The Defenceman was named to the NHL's 1982 All-Star team as a Hab. He later played with the Capitals, Kings, Sabres and Flames before retiring in 1987. He's currently a colour analyst for the Winnipeg Jets.

Doug Jarvis
Ironman Doug Jarvis didn't miss a single NHL game from 1975 to 1987. He won the Stanley Cup four times as a Montreal Canadien; 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979. In 1984 he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward. In 1987 he won the NHL's Bill Masterton Trophy. Jarvis later won the Stanley Cup in 1999 and 2011 as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins.

Zdeno Chara
A six time NHL All-Star, three time Olympian, 2009 Norris winner and 2011 Stanley Cup winner, Zdeno Chara has a lengthy resume. The Slovakian has been captain of the Boston Bruins since 2011. For someone as notable as Zdeno Chara, he has very few certified signatures on the market.

Ilya Kovalchuk
Russian sniper Ilya Kovalchuk was drafted 1st overall by the Thrashers in 2001. He's a four time NHL All-Star, Olympic bronze medalist, 2004 Rocket Richard Trophy winner and former captain of the Atlanta Thrashers. The value of his stuff drops the longer he stays in the KHL and I was finally able to snap up his autograph for just a few dollars.

Henrik Tallinder
I've had my eye on this card for a while on COMC. The seller accepted my best offer and although I still believe I overpaid, I'm happy to find Tallinder's only certified autograph. Its limited to just 50 copies and they don't show up often. Henrik Tallinder played well over 700 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He dressed with the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils. In 2010 he helped Sweden win an Olympic Silver medal.

Marian Gaborik
Marian Gaborik has a ton of autographs on the market but with a fierce fan following, they aren't dirt cheap. The Slovakian sniper was selected 3rd overall by the Wild in 2000. He's a 3 time NHL All-Star and in 2014 won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Los Angeles Kings.

Jiri Fischer
From 1999 to 2005 defenceman Jiri Fischer played 300+ NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings. He won the Stanley Cup in 2002. His career ended suddenly when his heart briefly stopped during a game. He was forced to retire in the prime of his career.

Nicklas Backstrom
Swedish forward Nicklas Backstrom was drafted 4th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2006. In 577 career regular season NHL games with the Caps he's scored 572 points. He recorded 101 during the 2009/10 season alone. Backstrom has represented Sweden twice in the Olympics and in 2014, after some controversy, he won a Silver medal.

Drew Doughty
The Los Angeles Kings selected Drew Doughty 2nd overall in 2008. Widely regarded as one of the best defencemen in the NHL, Doughty won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He also helped Canada win Olympic Gold in 2010 and 2014.

Kevin Klein
This is a personal favourite of mine because I've been looking for it for a long time. Its Klein's only certified autograph. Since 2005 defenceman Kevin Klein has played nearly 500 regular season games in the NHL between the Predators and Rangers.

Ryan McDonagh
Ryan McDonagh was drafted 12th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007 but was traded to the Rangers in the Scott Gomez trade of 2009. In 2014 McDonagh was named the 27th captain in New York Rangers history. That year he also represented USA at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Nicklas Jensen
What a horrible signature! Nicklas Jensen was drafted by the Canucks in the first round of the 2011 NHL draft. He's played 24 games in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks since making his debut for the 2012/13 team.

Mark Barberio
Mark Barberio is an offensive minded defenceman who lead the AHL in points by a D man in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. He was a league All-Star both seasons. Since 2012 he's played 100+ games in the NHL with Tampa Bay.

Reto Berra
Reto Berra was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2006 but didn't come to North America until his rights were acquired by the Calgary Flames in 2013. The Swiss goalie has played 50 NHL games between the Flames and Colorado Avalanche. He played in the 2014 Olympics with Switzerland.

Ben Hanowski
Ben Hanowski was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins but made his way to Calgary in the Jarome Iginla trade. The St. Cloud State alumni has played 16 games with the Flames since 2013.

Greg McKegg
A third round pick of the Leafs from 2010, Greg McKegg has played 4 games with Toronto since making his debut with the 2013/14 club.

Chris Tierney
A 2012 second round pick, Chris Tierney played 43 games with San Jose in his first season in the league, 2014/15.

Stanislav Galiev
Stanislav Galiev played two games with the Washington Capitals at the very end of the 2014/15 season and scored one goal. The Russian was drafted in 86th overall by the Capitals in 2010.

Ryan Hartman
A 2013 NHL first round draft pick, Ryan Hartman played 5 games with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2014/15 season.

Chad Rau
Originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005, Chad Rau spent four years at Colorado College before being signed by the Minnesota Wild as a free agent in 2010. He scored 2 goals in 9 career NHL games with the 2011/12 Wild. This particular card is notable for being Rau's only certified autograph.

Elias Lindholm
Elias Lindholm was drafted 5th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2013. He's already played 139 games in the NHL. His father, Mikael, briefly played in the NHL with the LA Kings.

David Broll
David Broll recorded one assist in five career NHL games with the 2013/14 Toronto Maple Leafs. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2015 but has yet to dress with the club.

Linden Vey
Linden Vey made his NHL debut with the 2013/14 Los Angeles Kings but didn't spend enough time with the team to earn his name on the Stanley Cup. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in the summer of 2014 and spent entire 2014/15 season in the NHL with the Canucks. He's played almost 100 games in the NHL.

Radko Gudas
From 2012 to 2015 defenceman Radko Gudas played 125+ NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was recently traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. Gudas represented the Czech Republic at the 2014 Olympics.

Darcy Kuemper
Before Deven Dubnyk stole the show Darcy Kuemper was the hot goalie in Minnesota. He's played over 60 games with the Wild since 2013.

Patrick Bordeleau
Forward Patrick Bordeleau was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2004. He spent a few years playing pro before making his NHL debut with the 2012/13 Colorado Avalanche. Two different injuries limited him to just one hockey game during the 2014/15 season.

Marek Mazanec
Czech goalie Marek Mazanec has played 27 games in the NHL with the Nashville Predators since making his NHL debut during the 2013/14 season.

Connor Murphy
The Coyotes drafted defenceman Connor Murphy 20th overall in 2011. Since making his debut with the 2013/14 Coyotes he's become an NHL regular and has already played 100+ games in the league. He recently won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2015 World Championships. His father is former NHLer Gord Murphy.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau
Since 2013 Jean-Gabriel Pageau has played over 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators.

Dylan McIlrath
Drafted 10th overall in 2010, Dylan McIlrath has played just three NHL games with the New York Rangers. The 6.05' defenceman is a tough customer and continues to develop.

Tanner Pearson
Los Angeles' first round pick of the 2012 NHL draft, Tanner Pearson made his NHL debut during the 2013 NHL playoffs. He scored four goals and 12 points in 24 games during the 2014 playoffs as the Kings captured the Stanley Cup.

Joey Hishon
Joey Hishon was drafted 17th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2010. He made his NHL debut during the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. He played over a dozen games for the 2014/15 Avalanche. Hishon missed nearly two full years of hockey due to concussion related problems since being drafted, it seems his autograph may have been affected...

Michael Bournival
Michael Bournival captained the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 2012 Memorial Cup championship. He's since played over 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL with the Habs.

Will Acton
An undrafted forward, Will Acton spent four seasons at Lake Superior State University before being signed as a free agent by the AHL's Toronto Marlies. Acton later signed with the Oilers and from 2013-2015 he played 33 games in the NHL with Edmonton. His father, Keith, was a long time NHLer.

Phillip Danault
Chicago's first round pick of the 2011 NHL draft, Phillip Danault played two games with the club during the 2014/15 NHL season.

Andrej Nestrasil
I remember watching Andrej Nestrasil when he played for the Prince Edward Island Rocket. The 2009 Detroit draft pick made his NHL debut with the 2014/15 Red Wings. He played 13 games with Detroit before being claimed off waiver by the Carolina Hurricanes. Nestrasil was given a bigger role in Carolina and played 41 games for them, scoring 7 goals and 18 points.

Nicolas Deschamps
The Anaheim Ducks drafted Nicolas Deschamps 35th overall in 2008. He was later traded to the Maple Leafs and then the Capitals. He made his NHL debut with Washington in 2013/14, playing three games with the club.

David Musil
Defeceman David Musil was drafted 31st overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2011. He played four games with the 2014/15 Oilers. Born in Canada, he's represented the Czech Republic in International play. His father, Frank, also played in the NHL.

Petr Straka
Czech Petr Straka was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010 but was never signed by the team. In 2013 the Philadelphia Flyers signed Straka to a three-year deal. He recorded two assists in three NHL games with the 2014/15 Flyers.

Duncan Siemens
Duncan Siemens played one NHL game with the Colorado Avalanche towards the end of the 2014/15 season. The defenceman was drafted 11th overall by the Avalanche in 2011.

Adam Lowry
In 2014/15 Adam Lowry played 80 regular season games with the Winnipeg Jets in his first year in the league. He scored 11 goals and 23 points as an NHL rookie. His father, Dave, played over 1000 games in the NHL.

Rob Collins
From 1998 to 2002 Rob Collins played for Ferris State University. The undrafted forward was signed by the New York Islanders in 2003. He played 8 career NHL games with the 2005/06 Islanders, scoring one goal and one assist.

Troy Bodie
Troy Bodie was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2003. He made his NHL debut with the 2008/09 Anaheim Ducks. Since then he's played 150+ NHL games between the Ducks, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs.

Brad Schlegel
Defenceman Brad Schlegel played 55 regular season+playoff games in the NHL between 1991 and 1994. He played for the Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames. He's most notable for being a member of Canada's 1992 and 1994 Olympic hockey teams. He brought home a silver medal on both occasions.

Lou Crawford
Between 1989 and 1992 Lou Crawford played 26 NHL games with the Boston Bruins. He's the brother of former NHL head coach Marc Crawford.

Christian Tanguay
Christian Tanguay played two games in the NHL with the 1981/82 Quebec Nordiques.

Perry Turnbull
Perry Turnbull was the 2nd overall pick of the great 1979 NHL draft. He scored 30+ goals a season three times with the St. Louis Blues. Turbull played 600+ NHL games between the Blues, Canadiens and Jets. His son, Travis, has recently played in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres.

Gerry Meehan
Between 1968 and 1979 Gerry Meehan played 680 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He dressed with the Flyers, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Canucks, Flames and Capitals. He was captain of the Buffalo Sabres from 1971 to 1974. He returned to the Sabres after retiring as a player and from 1986 to 1993 served as the Sabres' general manager.

Al Johnson
Al Johnson played two games for the 1956/57 Montreal Canadiens and then 100+ games for the Detroit Red Wings between 1960 and 1963. He scored 21 goals and 49 points in 105 career NHL regular season games.

Chick Webster
John "Chick" Webster played 14 NHL games with the 1949/50 New York Rangers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On top of the 53 NHL autographs I've also got an Olympian and six NHL backups to show

Eric Strobel
Eric Strobel was a member of the famed 1980 USA "Miracle" Gold medal winning team. He was a great hockey player and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres but never made it to The Show. After just a handful of games with Buffalo's AHL team Strobel retired from the game in 1980 to pursue other career options. His father, Art, briefly played in the NHL with the NY Rangers in the 1940s.

Johan Gustafsson
Johan Gustafsson dressed as a backup goalie 9 times with the Minnesota Wild between 2013 and 2014.

Bryan Pitton
February, 2010 Bryan Pitton dressed as the Edmonton Oilers' backup goalie for three games.

Jason Missiaen
October, 2013 6.08' giant Jason Missiaen dressed as backup goalie for the New York Ranges in three NHL games. Missiaen was originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens but was left unsigned by the team.

Harri Sateri
Finnish goalie Harri Sateri dressed as a backup goalie in one NHL game with the 2011/12 San Jose Sharks. He spent 4 seasons playing AHL hockey for San Jose before going back to Europe.

J-F Racine
Jean-Francois Racine dressed as backup goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs once during the 2006/2007 NHL season. He spent five seasons playing for hockey for the Leafs in the minors.

Oscar Dansk
The Columbus Blue Jackets drafted Oscar Dansk 31st overall in 2012. He dressed as a backup goalie for one game with the 2014/15 Columbus Blue Jackets.

1957/58 Signed AHL Program = 12 New Graphs

Just one package in the mail this week but it was a good one. It contained two multi-signed programs. I got them at a great price. Seller was a baseball guy who wasn't able to list any of the autographs on the programs. A trained eye like mine saw some gems.

They are both 1957/58 Springfield Indians programs. One is signed by the 1957/1958 Springfield Indians and by the visiting Cleveland Barons. The other, by a few Boston Bruins players who appear to have been at the game for one reason or another.

With these 12, the grand total of unique NHL signatures is now 4,374.

These are the programs "before"

This is what ends up in the collection:

Don Simmons
Don Simmons appeared in 249 regular season NHL games between 1956 and 1969. As a backup goalie with the Maple Leafs, he won the Stanley Cup in 1962, 1963 and 1964. He was the second goalie in the history of the NHL to wear a mask. He passed away in 2010.

Claude Evans
Claude Evans played four games with the 1954/55 Montreal Canadiens and one game with the 1957/58 Boston Bruins. I sacrificed a Floyd Smith signature for this one as the autographs intersected. It wasn't a big deal since Floyd's autographs are common and Evans' are not. Claude's actually got a pretty interested signature. If you enlarge the pic, you can see the "e" he ends the Claude with is quite unique.

Cal Gardner
Cal Gardner was player/assistant coach of the Springfield Indians when he penned this signature. Between 1945 and 1957 Cal Gardner played 750+ regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He was a member of the Rangers, Leafs, Blackhawks and Bruins. He won the Stanley Cup with Toronto in 1949 and 1951. His sons, Dave and Paul, also played in the NHL.

Buddy Boone
From 1956 to 1958, Buddy Boone played 34 regular season and 22 playoff games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins. He passed away in 1986.

Harry Pidhirny
Harry Pidhirny played two NHL games with the 1957/58 Boston Bruins. He played over 1000 games in the AHL and was inducted into the league's Hall of Fame. He passed away in 2010.

Bob Armstrong
From 1950 to 1962, Bob Armstrong played well over 500 games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins. The defenceman was a three-time Stanley Cup finalist but never won the trophy. Armstrong became a well liked school teacher after retiring from hockey. He passed away in 1990.

Al Nicholson
From 1955 to 1957, Al Nicholson played 19 games with the Boston Bruins. He had a lengthy and successful minor league hockey career in the old WHL. Nicholson died of cancer in 1978. He was only 42 years old.

Dale Anderson
Defenceman Dale Anderson played 13 NHL games with the 1956/57 Detroit Red Wings. I had written to him a couple times but never heard back so I finally get to add his signature to the collection.

Gerry Ehman
Between 1957 and 1971, Gerry Ehman played nearly 500 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He suited up for the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and Oakland Seals. Ehman won the Stanley Cup with the 1964 Toronto Maple Leafs. He later became General Manager of the St. Louis Blues in the 1970s. In the 1980s, as a scout and later assistant GM, he won the Stanley Cup four times with the New York Islander. He passed away in 2006.

Jack Caffery
Between 1954 and 1958, Jack Caffery played 57 NHL games. He spent time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. Amazingly, Caffery was also a pro baseball player (see his stats) and was signed by the Milwaukee Braves. Sometimes referred to as John Caffery, Jack passed away in 1992. His brother, Terry, also played in the NHL.

Fred Glover
From 1949 to 1953, Fred Glover played 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He suited up with the Red Wings and Blackhawks. He won the 1952 Stanley Cup with Detroit. He was a three time AHL player of the year and is in the league's Hall of Fame. Glover later spent six seasons as a head coach in the NHL. He was bench boss of the Oakland/California Seals and LA Kings. Glover passed away in 2001.

Steve Kraftcheck
Another AHL Hall of Famer, defenceman Steve Kraftcheck played 157 regular season games in the NHL. Between 1950 and 1959 he suited up with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. He died in 1997.

A Season In Autographs: 2014/2015

WIth the season over I thought it was time to post this. the 2014/2015 season saw 140 NHL debuts. Some lists will say 141 but thats because they include Joey Hishon, who made his debut in the 2013/14 playoffs, and thus that season in my books. I haven't made much progress with the autographs from this season yet for obvious reasons. I'll have to force myself to wait about a year to get most of these, when all the rookie hype dies down and I can buy the certified autographs for $1-2 each.

40 Recent TTM Returns

$
0
0
Finally got home to pick up my recent TTM returns, over a months worth of mail. I'm moving from Halifax to Ottawa this month but my mail still goes to my home base in Prince Edward Island because these returns can take anywhere from 5 days to 5 years. 40 New through the mail autograph returns to show in this post. Of those, 30 are new NHL signatures and another 10 are new hockey graphs. The grand total of unique NHL signatures now stands at 4,507 for just under 62% of everyone who has played in the league since its creation in 1917.
I also got TTM returns from Pete Stemkowski, Danton Cole, Lou Franceschetti, Troy Crowder, John McIntyre, Wayne Merrick and Stephan Lebeau. I had, however, already acquired autographs of those players since writing to them. I didn't show them here because they aren't new player signatures but in most cases I replaced the traded for autograph with one I got through the mail on my standard index card design. The old autographs are added to my growing tradelist. Check out my hundreds of extras.

Jack Martin
Jack Martin played one game in the NHL with the 1960/61 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ulf Sterner
Although Ulf Sterner only played four games in the NHL, he holds an important note in the league's history. In 1965 he became the first European born and trained player to play in the NHL. The Swedish forward had great success on the International stage as well. As luck would have it, I actually complete a trade for another Sterner autograph just days before I got this one in the mail. I had tried writing to him a couple times but this is the first one that made its way back from Sweden.

Gerry Gray
Goalie Gerry Gray appeared in seven NHL games with the 1970/71 Red Wings and one game with the 1972/73 Islanders. I have a soft spot for goalies and since I have an autograph of nearly every living net minder, I rarely get to add new ones.

Dennis O'Brien
From 1970 to 1980 Dennis O'Brien played well over 600 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. The defenceman spent most of his career with the North Stars but also saw time with the Rockies, Barons and Bruins.

Nelson Pyatt
From 1973 to 1980 Nelson Pyatt was four shy of playing 300 regular season games in the NHL. He played for the Red Wings, Capitals and Rockies. Two of his sons, Taylor and Tom, have played in the NHL.

Larry Romanchych
Between 1970 and 1977 Larry Romanchych played over 300 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He started his career in Chicago but spent most of his time in the NHL with the Atlanta Flames. His best season was in 1973/74 when he scored 22 goals and 51 points for the Flames.

Blake Dunlop
Blake Dunlop scored 130 goals and 404 points in 550 regular season NHL games. His best years were in St. Louis. For his years of serving in the minors before breaking out as an NHL star, Dunlop was awarded the 1981 Bill Masterton Trophy.

Jorgen Pettersson
Swedish forward Jorgen Pettersson had a short but impressive NHL career. From 1980 to 1986 he scored 174 goals and 366 points in 435 regular season games. On a line with Blake Dunlop, Pettersson scored 35+ goals in three consecutive seasons with the Blues.

Bob Stephenson
Forward Bob Stephenson took a very unconventional route to the NHL. He was undrafted and played three seasons of Canadian University hockey before signing his first pro contract with the WHA's Birmingham Bulls. Stephenson spent two season in the WHA with the Bulls. In 1979/80 he played 18 games in the NHL, seeing time with both the Hartford Whalers and Toronto Maple Leafs. His son, Shay, later played a couple games in the NHL with the 06/07 LA Kings.

Inge Hammarstrom
One of the first Europeans to find success in the NHL, Inge Hammarstrom played for the Maple Leafs and Blues. Between 1973 and 1979 the Swedish forward played 427 regular season games in the NHL. After retiring as a player he spent many years with the Philly Flyers as a scout and now works for the Vancouver Canucks in the same capacity.

Merlin Malinowski
Between 1978 and 1983 Merlin Malinowski scored 54 goals and 165 points in 282 career NHL games.   He later represented Canada at the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Doug Berry
A University of Denver star, Doug Berry spent time in the WHA and NHL. He played 29 WHA games with the 1978/79 Edmonton Oilers and was an early teamate of Wayne Gretzky. From 1979 to 1981 Berry played 121 NHL games with the Colorado Rockies.

Jim Warner
Jim Warner was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1974 before spending 4 years at Colorado College. After graduating he decided to sign with the WHA instead of the NHL. He spent a season with the New England Whalers and then followed the team to the NHL. Warner played 32 NHL games with the 1979/80 Hartford Whalers and retired at season's end.

Larry Bolonchuk
Between 1972 and 1978 Larry Bolonchuk played 74 games in the NHL. The defenceman was a member of the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals.

Doug Patey
From 1976 to 1979 Doug Patey 45 games in the NHL with the Washington Capitals. His brother, Larry, was a long time NHLer.

 Norm Barnes
Between 1976 and 1982 Norm Barnes played 150+ games in the NHL. He was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers and Hartford Whalers.

Jiri Latal
From 1989 to 1992 Czech defenceman Jiri Latal played 92 games in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ilkka Sinisalo
One of Finland's first impact NHLers, Ilkka Sinisalo scored 39 goals and 76 points for the 1985/86 Philadelphia Flyers. He scored 20+ goals in a season 6 times with the Flyers. He's been a long time scout for the Flyers since retiring as a player.

Pat Hughes
Pat Hughes spent a decade in the NHL and played well over 600 regular season+playoff games in the league. He won the Stanley Cup with the 1979 Montreal Canadiens, 1984 Edmonton Oilers and 1985 Oilers.

Trent McCleary
From 1995 to 2000 Trent McCleary played just under 200 games in the NHL. He was a member of the Senators, Bruins and Canadiens. His career ended abruptly when he took a slapshot to the throat and required emergency surgery while playing for Montreal.

Mike Rucinski
Mike Rucinski appeared in 2 NHL playoff games with the 1987/88 Blackhawks and 1 NHL regular season game with the 1988/89 Hawks. The forward was a undrafted University of Illinois-Chicago alumni.

Brad Lauer
From 1986 to 1996 Brad Lauer played over 300 games in the NHL. He played for the Islanders, Hawks, Senators and Penguins. Lauer has recently spent time as an NHL assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks.

Remi Royer
Defenceman Remi Royer played 18 games in the NHL with the 1998/1999 Chicago Blackhawks. He was a tough customer who recorded no points but 67 penalty minutes with the Hawks.

Gord Walker
Between 1986 and 1990 Gordie Walker played 31 games in the NHL. He split his time in the league between the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings.

Derek Smith
Between 1976 and 1983 Derek Smith played well over 300 games in the NHL. He spent most of his career with the Buffalo Sabres but last played for the Detroit Red Wings. He scored 20+ goals in a season twice with Buffalo.

Dave Snuggerud
Between 1989 and 1993 University of Minnesota alumni Dave Snuggerud played 265 regular season games in the NHL. He saw time with the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers. He represented America at the 1988 Olympics.

Mike McNeill
A Notre Dame alumni, Mike McNeill played 63 NHL games from 1990 to 1992. He dressed with the Chicago Blackhawks and Quebec Nordiques.

Scott McLellan
Scott McLellan played 2 NHL games with the 1982/83 Boston Bruins. He found great success as a businessman after retiring from hockey. He's a big time real estate developer in Toronto.

Joe DiPenta
Between 2003 and 2008 defenceman Joe DiPenta played over 200 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He's most notable for winning the Stanley Cup in 2007 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. I find it odd when retired players sign with a different number than they're wearing in the picture, he wore #33 with Anaheim but not Atlanta.

Victor Oreskovich
Victor Oreskovich was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2004 but took two seasons off from hockey after the 2006/07 OHL season. He signed an NHL contract with the Florida Panthers in 2009. From then until 2012 he played 67 regular season games in the NHL between the Panthers and Canucks. He's best remembered for appearing in 19 playoff games with the Canucks and helping the team reach the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. The Notre Dame alumni who studied finance retired in 2012 to pursue a business career.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The last 10 autographs in this post are all hockey related but don't go into my all-time NHL player collection.

Steve Carlyle
From 1972 to 1976 Steve Carlyle was a member of the WHA's Alberta and then Edmonton Oilers. He played in over 200 games for the club. The former Montreal Canadiens draft pick took the road less travelled to professional hockey, spending time at the University of Alberta before joining the Oilers.

Wendell Bennett
Wendell Bennett played one season, 67 WHA games, with the 1974/75 Phoenix Roadrunners. He scored 4 goals and 19 points.

Brian Bradley
Brian Bradley spent two seasons in the WHA playing for New York and San Diego. He dressed in 196 regular season+playoff games in the rebel league, scoring a very respectable 41 goals and 103 points.

Bill Gratton
Bill Gratton recorded 1 assist in 6 career WHA games with the 1975/76 Calgary Cowboys.

John Ferguson jr.
John Ferguson jr. was General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2003 to 2008. Ferguson is currently assistant GM of the Boston Bruins. He's the son of legendary NHL tough guy John Ferguson.

Francois Giguere
From 2006 to 2009 Francois Giguere was General Manager of the Colorado Avalanche. He started his career as an assistant GM with the Dallas Stars in 1994. He moved to Colorado a season later and has his name on the Stanley Cup twice, in 1996 and 2001 with the Avs.

Tod Button
Tod Button was assistant coach of the Washington Capitals from 1994 to 1997. Since then he's worked as a scout and director of scouting with the Calgary Flames. His father, Jack, was once GM of the Penguins and his brother, Craig, was once GM of the Flames.

Kyle Dubas
I don't really know where to put this autograph at the moment since I don't have a binder for assistant GMs. I wanted to add Kyle Dubas because he makes headlines with Leafs and has the potential to be their future GM.

Todd Brost
Todd Brost never played in the NHL but he's notable for winning an Olympic Silver medal with Team Canada in 1992. I like to think of my NHL autograph collection as a representation of hockey history. I've been thinking about chasing Ice Hockey Olympians who never played in the NHL to give the collection more of an International flavour. If I find some international stamps and some time I plan to grow this aspect of my collection.

Dan Schachte
Dan Schachte worked as an NHL Linesman for 30 years, working over 2,000 games. Another aspect of my autograph collection i'd like to grown is of NHL referees and linesmen. I only have a handful at the moment. I wish I knew where to send current NHL officials as finding contact information for these guys can be tricky.

NHL Backups Only

$
0
0

This isn't a mail post, but one that will be consistently updated and added to the Collection page. Other than my NHL year by year debut collection, I have posted my WHA autographs and now my NHL backup goalies. To come are my autograph collections of female players and NHL head coaches, assistant coach and general managers who never played in the league.

I have two blogs, this one and Benchwarmers, a blog about my little niche in hockey history, goalies who have appeared in the NHL as backups but never dressed in the NHL. I've managed to uncover 145 goalies who have only appeared in the NHL as backups. If you want more information for any goalie, click their name and you will be directed to my other blog. I have written a blog post for each goalie with a bio, picture, stats and confirmed NHL games.

From a hobby perspective these goalies are interesting because when they sit on the bench of an official NHL game, they are eligible for NHL rookie cards, even if they never actually play.

Note: One time NHL backup Russ Gillow played in WHA, his autograph is in that collection.

Mail: Redemptions, Trades & TTMs

$

0
I'll start out with another all to often shout-out to the devil of this hobby, Canada Post, for losing yet another package this month. When, again, can I expect another fee increase and service decrease?

78 new autographs to show in this post since my last mail call. They bring the grand total of unique signatures to 4,585 for 63% of everyone who's ever played in the NHL. Autographs in this post where obtained in four trades, a couple redemptions, a couple Ebay purchases and a bunch of TTM returns.

I've got a couple more trades in the works but my lack of a permanent living address might delay my next mail post. I also have a dozen new autographs recently purchased on COMC.com but will wait until I add a few more until I get them shipped (and for just $3!…oh how I love that website). I also have my eyes on a few vintage multi signed programs that I'm going to scoop up as soon as I get some money rolling in. Finding a part time job is amount the very first things I plan on doing when I get settled in Ottawa.

My apologies for those who have sent me an email lately. I believe I've gotten back to everyone. I've had a pretty hectic month of August. I've moved from Nova Scotia to PEI and have a final destination of Ottawa upcomming. I'll be in the Nation's capital for at least two years working towards a masters degree. It'll be my first time living outside of the Maritimes. Anyone know any good card shops in the area? I'm hoping to get to the Toronto Card Expo this fall.

Panini redemption

Bob Gainey
Well this story starts way back in 2011 when I redeemed a Bobby Rousseau /25 autograph. I emailed them twice with a request for a replacement but It took a phone call for them to actually do something. This is the only card in this post that doesn't count towards my total since I had a TTM Gainey autograph before. I don't usually post upgrades but its a rare occurrence that a redemption replacement turned out in my favour. Thanks Painini, even if it took four years.

Upper Deck redemption

Anze Kopitar
I got this redemption in a trade just over a month ago so it was a really quick turn around for Upper Deck. This is my first autograph from the "Wire Photos" set. Very cool cards. I was shocked to see how much this card recently sold for. I might have to consider downgrading. Anze Kopitar is a three time NHL All-Star and two time Stanley Cup champion.

Trade #1

BIG trade with Jeff to get things rolling. 40 new autographs came my way. Its not everyday I can find someone with so many autographs that I need. Thanks Jeff!

Jordan Eberle
Jordan Eberle has already played five seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. He was named to the 2012 NHL All-Star team. The value of Eberle autographs have been slowly falling to the point where you can now get one for under $10.

Nazem Kadri
Nazem Kadri has scored 152 points in 250 career regular season NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Being a Leafs top prospect has kept his autograph selling relatively well since his NHL debut.

David Krejci
David Krejci has very few certified autographs on the market for a player of his status. Boston stars also sell for good money and Krejci has been one of the Bruins best players over the last few years. He helped the Bruins win the 2011 Stanley Cup. In 2010 and 2014 he represented the Czech Republic at the Winter Olympics.

Carl Hagelin
Carl Hagelin recently signed with the Anaheim Ducks after four solid seasons with the New York Rangers. He won a Silver medal at the 2014 Olympics with Sweden.

Philippe Dupuis
From 2008 to 2012 Phil Dupuis played 116 regular season games in the NHL. He was a member of the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nathan Robinson
Undrafted forward Nathan Robinson played 5 NHL games with the 2003/04 Detroit Red Wings and 2 NHL games with the 2005/06 Boston Bruins.

B.J. Combeen

Luke Gazdic
Since 2012 Luke Gazdic has played over 100 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers. He was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in 2007 and spent four years in the Dallas system before being claimed off waivers by the Oilers in 2013.

Kenny Agostino
Kenny Agostino was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins but found his way to Calgary as part of the Jarome Iginla trade in 2013. The Yale University star played 8 NHL games with the 2013/14 Calgary Flames.

Zach Trotman
Defenceman Zach Trotman has played 29 NHL games with the Boston Bruins since making his debut for the 2013/14 team. He was the last player selected in the 2010 NHL draft.

Brian Gibbons
An undrafted Boston College alumni, Brian Gibbons has played for both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Columbus Blue Jackets since 2013.

Scott Parse
From 2009 to 2012 Scott Parse played 79 regular season+playoff games with the LA Kings.

Jamie Doornbosch
I've tried writing to Doornbosch twice and even corresponded with him via email to get an address but never heard back. He was an emergency signing by the Islanders and played just 1 NHL game with the team. That was the only game of pro hockey he has ever played. He's spent all of his career in the OHL as a junior and then Canadian University hockey.

Niklas Hjalmarsson
I think Niklas Hjalmarsson has a thing against signing for card companies, otherwise he should have a bunch of certified autographs on the market. The Swedish defenceman has an impressive resume. He's helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup 3 times; 2010, 2013 and 2015. He also helped Sweden win a Silver Medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Patrick Kaleta
Since 2006 Patrick Kaleta has played 348 regular season games with the Buffalo Sabres.

Lukas Krajicek
Between 2001 and 2010 defenceman Lukas Krajicek played 300+ games in the NHL. He was a member of the Panthers, Canucks, Lightning and Flyers. He's won 3 World Championship medals with the Czech Republic and represented the country at the 2014 Olympics.

Joe Corvo
From 2002 to 2014 offensive defenceman Joe Corvo played well over 700 games in the NHL. He represented USA at the 2003 and 2006 Ice Hockey World Championships.

Bryan Young
From 2006 to 2008 defenceman Bryan Young played 17 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers. He's been playing in Asian since 2010 and recently got his South Korean citizenship.

Erik Reitz
Between 2005 and 2009 Erik Reitz played 50 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. The defenceman dressed for the Minnesota Wild and New York Rangers.

Jerred Smithson
From 2002 to 2014 Jerred Smithson played over 600 games in the NHL. He was a member of the Kings, Predators, Panthers, Oilers and Leafs.

Vernon Fiddler
Since 2002 Vernon Fiddler has played 700+ games in the NHL. Few modern day NHLers have played that much without getting a certified autograph but Fiddler goes under the radar being a checking line centre. He's played for the Predators, Coyotes and Stars.

Ales Kotalik
Ales Kotalik played 8 solid seasons of NHL hockey. He played well over 500 NHL games between the Sabres, Oilers, Rangers and Flames.

Layne Ulmer
Originally drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 1999, Layne Ulmer played 1 game in the NHL with the 2003/04 New York Rangers.

Tim Jackman
Tim Jackman has played nearly 500 games in the NHL but has yet to get a certified autograph. He's been a member of the Blue Jackets, Coyotes, Kings, Islanders, Flames and Ducks.

Carl Corazzini
A Boston University alumni and captain, the undrafted free agent was signed by the local Bruins when his college career was over. Carl Corazzini played 19 NHL games between 2003 and 2007. He dressed with the Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks.

Benoit Dusablon
There are a lot of current and former NHLers who have appeared in these Quebec Pee Wee tournament sets. I believe this is the first to go into my autograph collection. Benoit Dusablon was never drafted but went on to play 3 NHL games with the 2003/04 New York Rangers.

Jed Ortmeyer
Between 2003 and 2012 Jed Ortmeyer played 345 regular season games in the NHL. The undrafted Omaha native played for the Rangers, Predators, Sharks and Wild.

Steve McLaren
Enforcer Steve McLaren recorded 25 penalty minutes in his 6 career NHL games with the 2003/04 St. Louis Blues.

Chris Kelleher
Chris Kelleher was drafted in 1993 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He spent four seasons at Boston University before making his pro hockey debut in 1998. The defenceman only played 1 game in the NHL, with the 2001/02 Boston Bruins.

Freebie!

A fellow collector was nice enough to just send me this autograph when he noticed I needed it! Many thanks Kingsley!

Brian Wiseman
A University of Michigan alumni, Brian Wiseman was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in 1991. He played 3 career games in the NHL with the 1996/97 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Trade #2

Thanks Nathan!

Kent Carlson
From 1983 to 1989 Kent Carlson played 100+ games in the NHL. He played for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and very briefly the Washington Capitals.

Dan Geoffrion
Dan Geoffrion was drafted 8th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1978. He played a season in the WHA with the Quebec Nordiques before making his NHL debut for the 1979/80 Habs. He played a season for the Canadiens and a season for the Winnipeg Jets. He's a member of one of hockey's most famous families. His father is NHL legend Boom Boom Geoffrion, his grandfather is legend Howie Morenz and his son, Blake, also played in the NHL.

Don Maloney
Currently General Manager of the Arizona Coyotes, Don Maloney had a lengthy NHL career. He played well over 800 regular season+playoff games between the New York Rangers and Islanders. His brother, Dave, was also a long time NHLer.

Jon Sim
From 1998 to 2011 Jon Sim nearly 500 games in the NHL. The journeyman defenceman was a member of the Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers and New York Islanders. He won the Stanley Cup as a rookie with the 1999 Dallas Stars, playing 4 playoff games during the Cup run.

Brandon Reid
From 2002 to 2007 Brandon Reid played 13 regular season and 10 playoff games with the Vancouver Canucks.

Eric Houde
Between 1996 and 1999 Eric Houde played 30 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens.

Trade #3

Trade with Marcel
This trade originated with an Ulf Sterner autograph but I actually got one back via TTM a couple days after completing it. Not to worry, three other great new NHL autographs were also part of the trade.

Marc Fortier
Between 1987 and 1993 Marc Fortier scored 42 goals and 102 points in 212 career NHL games. Most of that time was spent with the Quebec Nordiques but Fortier also saw time with the LA Kings and Ottawa Senators. Since 2011 he's been General Manager of the QMJHL's Chicoutimi Sagueneens. I tried writing to him a couple times there but never heard back.

Daniel Marois
Daniel Marois had a career year with the 1989/90 Toronto Maple Leafs when he scored 39 goals and 76 points in just 68 games. Between 1988 and 1996 Marois played 350 regular season games in the NHL, dressing with the Leafs, Islanders, Bruins and Stars.

Adrien Plavsic
From 1989 to 1997 Adrien Plavsic played 200+ NHL games. The defenceman played for the Blues, Canucks, Lightning and Mighty Ducks. In 1992 he helped Team Canada win a Silver medal at the Winter Olympics.

Trade #4

Trade with Rob

Leon Draisaitl
German forward Leon Draisaitl was drafted 3rd overall by the Oilers in 2014. He's already played half a season in the NHL. Had I known how thick this card is I likely wouldn't have traded for it. The thing is like a brick and thus poses some difficulty to store in its rightful year-of-debut binder. That being said, I'm happy to add an autograph of such a promising young player. I'll happily trade it for a thinner Draisaitl certified autograph.

Alexander Wennberg
Alexander Wennberg was drafted 14th overall by Columbus in 2013. He won a Silver medal at the 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships with Sweden. He played 68 games as an NHL rookie with the 2014/15 Blue Jackets.

Mickey Redmond
Mickey Redmond is best known for being on the 1972 Team Canada Summit Series team and for scoring 50+ goals in a season twice with the Detroit Red Wings. He has a couple rare certified autographs on the market and I plan to add one in the future. For now this do just fine for the collection.

Pierre Mondou
Like Redmond, Pierre Mondou also has a rare certified autograph I would like to add at some point in the future. Mondou played well over 500 career NHL games, all with the Montreal Canadiens. He won the Stanley Cup in 1978 and 1979.

EBAY
Two small Ebay purchases also came in the mail this month.

Justin Abdelkader
Justin Abdelkader has played over 450 regular season+playoff games with the Detroit Red Wings since 2007. In 2008 he was practising with the Red Wings team that won the Stanley Cup. Abdelkader got a day with the Cup but didn't get his name engraved on the trophy.

Jordie Benn
I keep a close eye on all new autograph subsets from hockey card products for signatures like this. For the most part, if a player doesn't sign in his rookie season then he's very unlikely to ever get a certified signature. Jordie Benn is an exception to that and earned his first certified autograph in his O-Pee-Chee set. Jordie was an undrafted defenceman who is one of few BCHL players to graduate into the NHL. He's played just under 200 NHL games with the Stars and his more famous brother, Jamie.

Around the house…

Marty Howe
This is the only autograph of the post that didn't come in the mail this past August. For the longest time I had this Howe/Howe autographed picture hanging on my wall. Until now I hadn't counted it towards my autograph total. I had a Gordie autograph, but no individual Marty autograph. I don't like to add dual signatures to the collection but this will be the exception for now. Marty Howe had more success in the WHA than he did the NHL. He still managed to play over 200 regular season+playoff games in the NHL between the Hartford Whalers and Boston Bruins.

Through The Mail (TTM) Autographs

Dick Lamby
I had included a custom index in Dick Lamby's TTM request. He signed it but did so on top of the picture, not the faded logo. I decided to keep this card instead, which is an extra he had thrown in. From 1978 to 1981 Lamby played 22 NHL games with the St. Louis Blues. He represented USA at the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Bobby Allen
Defeceman Bobby Allen played 1 game with the 2002/03 Edmonton Oilers and then 50 more NHL games with the Boston Bruins from 2006 to 2008.

Stan Drulia
Originally drafted by the Penguins in 1986, Stan Drulia made his NHL debut with the 1992/93 Tampa Bay Lightning. He played 24 games for the Lightning that season and then didn't return to the NHL again until 1999 for a second stint in Tampa Bay. From 1999 to 2001 he played another 102 games with the Lignting.

Shawn Cronin
Between 1988 and 1995 defeceman Shawn Cronin played 300+ regular season and playoff games in the NHL. The undrafted University of Illinois-Chicago alumni dressed in the NHL with the Capitals, Jets, Flyers and Sharks.

Corey Millen
Corey Millen represented USA at the 1988 Winter Olympics. From 1989 to 1997 he played well over 300 games in the NHL. He was a member of Gretzky's 1993 LA Kings that made it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.

Michel Petit
From 1982 to 1998 Michel Petit played well over 800 career NHL games for a then record 10 different NHL teams.

Gord Kruppke
From 1990 to 1994 Gord Kruppke played 23 career NHL games, all with the Detroit Red Wings.

Glenn Hicks
Glenn Hicks made his professional hockey debut with the 1978/79 WHA's Winnipeg Jets. After the leagues merged, Hicks was transferred back to the NHL team that had drafted him 28th overall in 1978, the Detroit Red Wings. Over the next two seasons Hicks played 100+ NHL games with the Red Wings.

Steve Coates
An undrafted Michigan Tech alumni, Steve Coates played 5 NHL games with the 1976/77 Detroit Red Wings. Since hanging up his skates he's spent many years as a colour commentator with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Mike Meeker
Mike Meeker played 4 NHL games with the 1978/79 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Steve Gatzos
From 1981 to 1985 Steve Gatzos played 90 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Doug Smith
Doug Smith was drafted 2nd overall by the LA Kings in 1981. From then until 1990 he played 500+ games in the NHL. At 29 he suffered a career ending neck injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He regained the ability to walk and made a career for himself outside of hockey.

Gord McTavish
The Montreal Canadiens drafted Gord McTavish 15th overall in 1974 but he was never able to crack their powerhouse roster. He went on to play 1 NHL game with the 1978/79 St. Louis Blues and 10 NHL games with the 1979/80 Winnipeg Jets. He scored a goal and four points in his short stint with the Jets.

Bruce McIntosh
Bruce McIntosh won an Olympic Silver medal with the 1972 Team USA squad. He went on to play 2 NHL games with the 1972/73 Minnesota North Stars.

Andre Hidi
A rare case of a player playing Canadian University before making the NHL, Andre Hidi spent four full seasons at the University of Toronto before signing with the Washington Capitals. He played 7 career NHL games for the Caps between 1984 and 1985.

Greg Hickey
Greg Hickey spent a decade playing pro hockey but only managed to crack an NHL roster once. He played 1 NHL game with the 1977/78 New York Rangers.

Larry Skinner
Between 1976 and 1980 Larry Skinner played 47 NHL regular season games and a couple playoff games with the the Colorado Rockies. He managed to score a respectable 10 goals and 22 points during his short NHL career.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As usual, I'll end the post with some hockey related autographs that fall outside of the NHL player collection.

Jay Feaster
Another one of my sub collections are current and former NHL General Managers who never played in the NHL. Jay Feaster has served as an NHL General Manager with both the Tampa Bay Lighting and Calgary Flames. He won the Stanley Cup in 2004 as GM of the Lightning.

Chris Imes
This one goes into my growing collection of hockey Olympians who never played in the NHL. A University of Maine alumni, Chis Imes represented the United States at the 1994 Olympic games. He was drafted by the Florida Panthers in 1993 but never cracked an NHL roster. Imes is the only member of the 1994 USA Olympic team not to play in the NHL.

Jim Ralph
I recently posted my backups only collection, Jim Ralph goes into that collection. The goalie dressed in at least one NHL game with the 1982/83 Chicago Blackhawks.

Danny Williams
My two major interests are hockey and politics. Danny Williams has had is hand in both worlds. He served as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from 2003 to 2010. He's currently President and Chief Executive of the AHL's St. John's IceCaps. This goes into my binder of completely random hockey related autographs.

1967/68 Tulsa Oilers CHL Program = 7 New Autographs

$

I'm currently working on a bigger mail post (TTMs and trades) but in the meantime I thought I'd post a recent acquisition. Picked up this old AHL program at a reasonable price and immediately went to work cutting it up and adding the new autographs to my collection.

If anyone knows a collector or shop selling vintage signed pro hockey programs please let me know. I know there's more out there but I don't come across them as often as I'd like to. I'm most interested in AHL/CHL/WHL programs and other minor leagues, which allows me to find hard to locate signatures of older guys who only briefly appeared in the NHL. I'm especially interested in programs pre 1980.

This program, from the Toronto Maple Leafs' CHL affiliate, featured a couple hard to find signatures and I'm particularly happy to get Al Smith. I have a soft spot for goalie autographs and Mr. Smith's isn't easy to get. The program also allowed me to upgrade my John McLellan autograph, who was coach of the team. The old McLellan signature has been added to my trade list, as with the half dozen NHL signatures on this program I already had.

With the 5 new NHL signatures the grand total is now 4,590 unique player autographs. The last two get added to my WHA and General Manager (soon to be published in a post) sub collections.

Al Smith
This was the #1 autograph I had my eyes on when purchasing this program. Al Smith's story is one worth reading about. He is the forgotten backup goalie of the famed 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs Cup winning team. Smith was backup goalie during the playoff run but has essentially ben forgotten as a member of their championship. His name never appeared on the Cup. From his 1965 NHL debut with the Maple Leafs to 1981 Smith travelled around North America playing for the Penguins, Red Wings, Sabres, Whalers and Rockies. He also spent five seasons in the WHA with the New England Whalers. When his hockey career was over Smith embarked on a very different career path. He dreamed of being a writer and spent all his money writing a book and then producing a play that failed miserably. He drove a cab to pay ends meat and died of cancer in 2002 while writing a second book. His first novel, The Parade has Passed, sold less than 100 copies and is impossible to find.

Len Haley
Len Haley spent 20 years playing pro hockey but only appeared in two NHL seasons. He played 27 games for the 1959/60 Detroit Red Wings and 3 games for the 1960/61 Red Wings. The forward posted 2 goals and 4 points in the NHL.

Dan Johnson
In the early 1970s Dan Johnson played 121 NHL games between the Maple Leafs, Canucks and Red Wings. He then spent 3 years in the WHA with Bobby Hull and the Winnipeg Jets. He helped the Jets win the 1973 Avco Cup and served as team captain for the 1974/75 season. In 1993 he passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease at only 48.

Randy Murray
Defenceman Randy Murray played 3 career NHL games with the 1969/70 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gordie Nelson
Like Randy Murray, Gord Nelson was a defenceman who's only 3 NHL games came with the 1969/70 Toronto Maple Leafs.

Serge Aubry
This autograph goes into the "WHA Only" binder. Serge Aubry spent five seasons in the WHA, four of which were with the Quebec Nordiques and the other with the Cincinnati Stingers. In 1988/89 he served as the NHL's Quebec Nordiques goalie coach. From 1992 to 2000 Aubry was an amateur scout with the Los Angeles Kings. He passed away in 2011.

Ray Miron
From 1976 to 1981 Ray Miron was General Manager of the NHL's Colorado Rockies. He had been GM of the Tulsa Oilers from 1964 to 1974. In 2004 he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contribution to hockey in the United States. He co-founded the recently defunct Central Hockey League in 1992.

The program produced a bunch of extra signatures, I've added to my tradelist cuts of the following who's autographs I already had in the collection:
Jim Dorey
Jean Payette (WHA)
Andre Hinse
Pat Quinn
Ron Ward
Gerry Meehan
Nick Harbaruk

A Mountain of Mail = 69 New Autographs

This is my first mail post since moving to Canada's capital city, Ottawa. I've been busy with my graduate program but always seem to find some time for the hobby. If there are any other collectors from the Ottawa area reading this, feel free to send me a message.

Many of these, the custom cards included, come from a big trade with a Slovakian collector. Thank-you Radovan for the great trade! Therefore, you'll see lots of great signatures from Slovakian hockey players.  I also got a package from a Russian seller with some KHL signatures, a couple ebay purchases, a number of TTM returns and even a gift from an NHL equipment manager.

With 60 new NHL signatures, the grand total of unique NHL signatures now stands at 4,650 autographs for 64% of everyone (7,278 people) who has played in the league since its creation in 1917.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
This autograph is a good example of why I tell anyone in the hobby to buy things for enjoyment and never for profit/investment. The value of the Ryan Nugent Hopkins cards, the 2011 1st overall draft pick, have steadily dropped to the point where I won this card for just over $2.

Anssi Salmela
From 2008 to 2011 Anssi Salmela played 112 NHL games between the New Jersey Devils and Atlanta Thrashers. With Finland, the defeceman won a Gold medal at the 2011 World Championships and Bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships.

Shaun Heshka
An undrafted defenceman, Shaun Heshka played 8 NHL games with the 2009/2010 Phoenix Coyotes.

Nikita Nesterov
Russian defeceman Nikita Nesterov is entering his second season as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Pasi Nurminen
From 2001 to 2004 goalie Pasi Nurminen appeared between the pipes in over 100 NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers. Since 2005 the Finnish native has been coaching hockey in Europe.

Sami Lepisto
From 2007 to 2012 defenceman Sami Lepisto played 176 regular season games in the NHL. He was a member of the Washington Capitals, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks. With Finland, he won Bronze medals at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

Andrei Nazarov
From 1993 to 2006 Russian tough guy Andrei Nazarov played nearly 600 games in the NHL. He suited up for the Sharks, Lightning, Flames, Mighty Ducks, Bruins, Coyotes and Wild. He's spent the last decade coaching in Russia.

Christian Ruuttu
From 1986 to 1995 Christian Ruuttu played well over 600 games in the NHL. He was a solid contributor who recorded 432 career regular season points. He represented the Buffalo Sabres at the 1988 NHL All-Star game. With Sweden, he won Silver medals at the 1992 and 1994 World Championships. Since 2004 he's worked as scout for both the Phoenix Coyotes and the Los Angeles Kings.

Dominic Lavoie
From 1988 to 1994 Dominic Lavoie scored 5 goals and 13 points in 38 career NHL games. He dressed briefly with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings.

Jean-Francois Jomphe
From 1995 to 1999 J-F Jomphe played 111 games in the NHL. He scored 10 goals and 39 points between the Mighty Ducks, Canadiens and Coyotes. Greatest Hockey Legends did a great interview with him about his career that you can read here

Cody McCormick
Since 2003 Cody McCormick has played well over 400 games in the NHL. He's been a member of the Avalanche, Sabres and Wild.

Rob Scuderi
Since 2003 defenceman Rob Scuderi has played well over 700 games in the NHL. He won a Stanley Cup in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins and a second Cup with the 2012 Los Angeles Kings.

Matt Greene
Like Rob Scuderi, its hard to believe Matt Greene has never gotten a certified autograph. Since 2005 defenceman Matt Greene has played almost 600 regular season and 80 playoff games in the NHL. He won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014 with the Los Angeles Kings.

Ilya Byakin

Peter Olvecky
Although I don't mind these custom cards, and the signature is ultimately what I'm after, the getty images watermark bugs me so much that I may have to take the knife to some of these and convert them into my standard index design. Slovakian forward Peter Olvecky played 31 NHL games with the 2008/09 Minnesota Wild and 1 NHL game with the 2009/10 Nashville Predators.

Mario Bliznak
From 2009 to 2011 Mario Bliznak played 6 career NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks. The Slovakian centre recorded 1 goal. He won the 2007 Memorial Cup with the WHL's Vancouver Giants. In 2012 he helped Slovakia win a Silver Medal at the World Hockey Championships.

Janne Pesonen
There are a few of these customs cards that don't have pictures that I'll likely cut up in the future and convert into my standard index design with a player picture. Forward Janne Pesonen played 7 career NHL games with the 2008/09 Pittsburgh Penguins. He won a World Championship Gold Medal with Finland in 2011.

Jim Watt
The first of my recent through the mail (TTM) returns. Jim Watt's extremely short NHL career consisted of one appearance between the pipes in just one period, 20 minutes, of a single NHL game with the 1973/74 St. Louis Blues. The Blues had signed him as a free agent after playing for Michigan State.

Leo Thiffault
Leo Thiffault only played 5 games in the NHL, and they all came in the playoffs with the 1968 Minnesota North Stars.

Rick Foley
This was a bittersweet return since it was likely one of the last autographs Rick Foley signed. He passed away this september. A tough defenceman, Rick Foley played 67 career NHL games, seeing time with the Blackhawks, Flyers and Red Wings. He also spent some time in the WHA with the Toronto Toros.

John Marks
From 1972 to 1982 defenceman John Marks played over 700 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He's spent over 30 years as a coach, twice serving as bench boss to ECHL champions. In 2012 he was inducted into the ECHL's Hall of Fame.

Brian Benning
From 1985 to 1995 Brian Benning played over 600 regular season+playoff games in the NHL as a member of the Blues, Kings, Flyers, Oilers and Panthers. I actually sent this request in 2012 so it took over 3 years to get back to me!

Bill Juzda
This Judza and the next four customs come from signed index cards I acquired from a trade with a another collector, thanks Fred! Bill Juzda played nearly 400 regular season NHL games between 1940 and 1952. He helped the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 1948 and 1951. Juzda passed away in 2008.

Hartland Monahan
From 1973 to 1981 Hartland Monahan played 334 regular season NHL games as a member of the Golden Seals, Rangers, Capitals, Kings, Penguins and Blues. His son, Shane, was a pro baseball player who spent some time in the MLB.

Vladimir Sobotka
Czechoslovakian Vladimir Sobotka spent seven years in the NHL before signing in the KHL for big money. He had turned down an NHL contract from the St. Louis Blues.

Phil Bourque
This is one of three signed nameplates featured in this mail post (the other two at the below). They have a great story to go with them. This summer I received an email from none other than the Pittsburgh Penguins' equipment manager. I was more than happy to help him find a few retired Pens goalies for a goalie mask they're putting together. He knew I collected signatures and sent me a bundle of signed nameplates! Three go into my autograph binders but the rest will decorate my study. Phil Bourque played well over 500 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He's most notable for winning the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992 with the Penguins.

Jack Toupin
I'll end with a nice vintage signature. Jack Toupin played 8 NHL games with the 1943/44 Chicago Blackhawks. He passed away in 1987 so I found his autograph on an old minor league hockey contract he had signed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Autographs 60-69 in this post don't go in my NHL debuts collection, but into my other hockey related autograph collections of GMs, coaches, NHL backup goalies and referees.

Bill Friday
Bill Friday was a long time NHL and WHA referee who officiated over 1400 games.

Randy Sexton
Currently Director of Amateur Scouting with the Penguins, Randy Sexton spent time as the General Manager of both the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers.

Pelle Lindbergh Autograph

A small but notable mail post. With these 4 new autographs the grand total of unique NHL signatures rises to 4,654

What I started with:
A 1984/84 Philadelphia Flyers team signed pennant. Scan makes it look ok but the actual pennant was old, stained, ripped, faded and smelly. It was an easy choice to cut out the autographs I needed. Since the seller failed to mention Pelle's autograph was part of it (do your research people!) I won this thing for a fraction of what a single Lindbergh signature would have cost. It was at $15 right up until the last few seconds and I thought I was going to get a mega steal. Unfortunately for me a couple other collectors noticed Lindbergh's signature and it ended for a good deal more. The seller had a bunch of signed pennants from the 80's and if I had the funds I would have bought a few more.

After cutting it up the end result is 4 new autographs to add to the collection.

Pelle Lindbergh
I'm thrilled to check Pelle of my want list. Not the prettiest of his autographs but its hard to complain considering the rarity of his signature. The Swedish goalie won the 1985 Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender, the first European to ever win the award. He was also a First Team All-Star that season. A few months later the 26 year old star lost control of his sports car and died.

Miroslav Dvorak
Czech defenceman Miroslav Dvorak was a seasoned professional before he made his way to North America. He was a member of the Philadelphia Flyers from 1982-1985. He passed away in 2008 from throat cancer.

Derrick Smith
I had written a TTM request to Smith but never got a response so this will do just fine for now. From 1984 to 1994 Derrick Smith played well over 500 games in the NHL. He was a longtime Flyer but also suited up for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars.

Len Hachborn
A Brantford, ON native and childhood friend of Wayne Gretzky, Len Hachborn played 100+ games in the NHL with the Flyers from 1983 to 1986.

The following cuts from this pennant have been to added to my trade list. All are available as I already had these NHL signatures.

Bob Clarke

Bob Froese

Brian Propp

Lindsay Carson

Ron Sutter

Mark Howe

Doug Crossman

Murray Craven

Ilkka Sinisalo

20 New NHL autographs to show in this post along with 5 other new hockey related signatures. The grand total now stands at 4,674  unique NHL player signatures. Although I'll still be using my PEI address to send TTM letters, I'm now getting other mail sent to Ottawa so my blog post frequency should increase.

I'm a big fan of COMC.com but whenever I get a substantial packaged shipped from their US headquarters, it can take what seems like forever. I'm nearing three weeks on an order and had been hoping they would have been in this mail post. In this post the autographs came from the Canadian division of COMC.com, an ebay purchase (the KHL autographs) and a trade (thanks Kingsley).

I sent out 150 letters this month. The 150 letters represent months of work and a stomach turning investment in stamps. I should have a big piles of TTM returns to post when I return from PEI this Christmas break and get my mail.

Alexei Vasiliev
Russian defenceman Alexei Vasiliev played one game in the NHL with the 1999/2000 New York Rangers. He spent many years playing pro hockey in Russia and played for Lokomotiv for over a decade. Fate was with Vailisiev when he was released by Lokomotiv, the team he had played for since 2001, in 2011. It was just before the plan crash that killed most of the team, but saving his life.

Kurtis McLean
Kurtis McLean spent four years at Norwich University in Vermont playing Division III hockey before he was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He played 4 career NHL games with the 2008/09 New York Islanders as a 27 year old rookie and scored 1 goal. McLean won the 2012/13 Spengler Cup with Canada.

Kris Versteeg
Kris Versteeg only has a handful of certified autographs on the market and they tend to sell for more than I was willing to pay for a Versteeg signature. I finally landed this one for just a couple dollars. Versteeg is most notable for winning the Stanley Cup in 2010 and 2015 with the Chicago Blackhawks. He's played over 500 NHL games between the Hawks, Leafs, Flyers, Panthers and Hurricanes.

Seth Jones
For a while Seth Jones was the talk of the hockey world. After settling in in the hockey hobby death zone of Nashville, his fame has declined accordingly. It also doesn't help that he's a defenceman. Son of retired NBA player Popeye Jones, Seth was drafted 4th overall in 2013 and immediately jumped to the NHL. Jones won a Bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships with USA. His brother, Caleb, was recently drafted by the Edmonton Oilers.

Mikael Granlund
Finnish forward Mikael Granlund was drafted 9th overall in 2010 by Minnesota. He's since played almost 200 NHL games. His younger brother, Markus, also plays in the NHL. Mikael won a Bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics with Finland.

Marcus Foligno
Since 2011 Marcus Foligno has played 200+ games in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabres. His father, Mike, was an NHL star and his brother, Nick, is captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Foligno family is a gift to collectors because they all have beautiful signatures.

Since 2013 Russian born Czech raised forward Dmitrij Jaskin has played just under 100 NHL games with the St. Louis Blues.

Adam Clendening
American born defenceman Adam Clendening was drafted 36th overall by Chicago in 2011. Since 2014 he has played 20+ NHL games between the Blackhawks, Canucks and his current team, the Penguins.

Corban Knight
Corban Knight was a Hobey Baker Award finalist in his final season of college hockey with North Dakota in 2013. Knight had been drafted by the Florida Panthers in 2009 but when the team couldn't sign him they traded his rights to the Calgary Flames. He's scored 1 goal in 9 career NHL games with the Flames.

Ryan Sproul
In his last season of junior hockey Ryan Sproul was named the OHL and CHL top defenceman. A 2011 second round pick by Detroit, Sproul has played one NHL game with the Red Wings and it came during the 2013/14 season.

Calle Jarnkrok
Drafted in the second round of the 2010 draft by the Red Wings, Jarkrok was traded to Nashville in 2014 and has since played 100 NHL games. With Sweden, Jarnkrok won a Gold medal at the 2013 World Championships and a Bronze in 2014.

Seth Griffith
Seth Griffith was an OHL All-Star and league champion in each of his last two junior seasons with the London Knights. As a rookie he played 30 NHL games for the 2014/15 Boston Bruins.

Mackenzie Skapski
Mackenzie Skapski was drafted 170th overall by the NY Rangers in 2013. He played 2 NHL games for the 2014/15 Rangers when their crease was hit with injuries. It was his first season as a pro hockey player.

Patrik Sundstrom
From 1982 to 1992 Patrik Sundstrom played over 700 regular season+playoff games in the NHL, splitting his time between the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils. He scored over 200 goals in the NHL, his best season being a 38 goal year with the 1983/84 Canucks. With Sweden he won a Silver medal at the 1981 World Championships and the 1984 Canada Cup. His twin brother, Peter, also played in the NHL.

Andrew McBain
From 1983 to 1994 Andrew McBain played 600+ games in the NHL. His best season was a 37 goal 77 point year with the 1988/89 Winnipeg Jets. He won a Silver medal at the 1989 World Championships with Canada.

Dave Barr
From 1982 to 1984 Dave Barr played 600+ NHL games. He was a journeyman who saw time with the Bruins, Rangers, Blues, Whalers, Red Wings and Stars.

Tim Armstrong

Joe Klukay
With the Toronto Maple Leafs Joe Klukay won the Stanley Cup in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951. Klukay played well over 500 NHL games between the Leafs and Boston Bruins. He passed away in 2006.

Frank Mathers
From 1948 to 1952 Frank Mathers played 23 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The defenceman was also a professional football player. He was a fullback with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ottawa Rough Riders. He later became a longtime coach and GM with the AHL's Hershey Bears winning a handful of Calder Cups and being inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992 as a builder. He passed away in 2005.

Al Stewart
From 1985 to 1992 Alan Stewart played 64 games in the NHL, all but 4 with the New Jersey Devils and he ended his career with the Boston Bruins.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rebecca Johnston
A Cornwall University alumni, Rebecca Johnston has won 2 Olympic Gold medals with Canada, in 2010 and 2014.

Jennifer Wakefield
Jennifer Wakefield recently played men's professional hockey in Sweden with Boras HC. The talented forward helped Canada win Gold at the 2014 Olympics.

Bob Goodenow
From 1992 to 2005 Bob Goodenow was Executive Director of the NHLPA. I already have a Gary Bettman autograph so its a natural fit in my small "NHL Executives" stash. Its hard to talk about the 2004/05 lockout without mentioning Goodenow and Bettman. Not only was Goodenow a Harvard law graduate, he was also a good hockey player who spent time in the Washington Capitals organization. I had tried writing to him a couple times while he worked for the NHLPA but never got an answer.

John D'Amico
Linesman John D'Amico officiated over 1,700 NHL games from 1964 to 1988. He worked 20 Stanley Cup Finals so if you watch historical hockey games its hard not to see D'Amico. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. He passed away in 2005.

Neil Armstrong
From 1957 to 1978 Neil Armstrong officiated 1,700+ NHL games. The linesman was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. His son, Doug, is currently General Manager of the NHL's St. Louis Blues. These two also inspired me to send out about a dozen request to some retired referees and linesmen. Its a collection I'd like to grow but I still can't find an address to use to send to current officials.

Mail - 4,700 Autographs

$

26 new NHL alumni autographs to show in this mail post increases the grand total to exactly 4,700 unique NHL player signatures. The common theme in this post is actually that most of the players have passed away.

One of the most frustrating things about collecting autographs is that being dead doesn't mean the player's signature is worth anything. If even a devout hockey fan wouldn't recognized the player's name, odds are the signature isn't worth anything, even though the player is deceased. Enter an ebay seller who listed a bunch of signatures from recently deceased players. While I'm used to seeing the same signatures sit and sit on ebay for prices that are way to high, this seller had some shockingly reasonable prices. Shout out to fellow collector Kingsley who told me I should check out the seller's stuff. A couple emails later and I had negotiated a deal for a big package of signatures.

Save the first few autographs that I made some customs with, you'll notice a consistent design, I'd LOVE to find out the story on these signed index cards. I have a feeling that it was, at one time, a mega collection that was sold off into many parts. I know they're authentic and I've even seen autographs from this collection used in ITG/UD cut autograph cards. Does anyone know the backstory on the collector who made them?

Stay tuned for a couple big mails posts to start the new year. I have a stack of TTM returns to scan and document. I'm also holding hope that I'll get a package from COMC.com full of autographs. I requested them to be shipped almost two months ago and they were sent shortly thereafter. I haven't had a package from the site go missing yet but I'm losing hope. It usually never takes more than a couple weeks for anything from the States to get here. I guess there's a possibility that since its a larger package it was delayed by customs. In any case, I had bought some great signatures that I'm anxiously awaiting. I should reach the 5,000 autograph mark shortly into 2016.

Ed Hoekstra
Ed Hoekstra was a long time pro hockey player who spent one season in the NHL and a couple in the WHA. He played 70 career NHL games with the inaugural 1967/68 Philadelphia Flyers and in the 1970s saw time with the WHA's Houston Aeros. He died in 2011 after being hit by a car.
