Mail - 29 New Signatures

$

I have finally completed the long task of scanning and organizing the collection by year of debut. You can now see my entire signature collection here. Back to posting mail. 29 new signatures have been added to the collection since the last mail post. The Cherie Piper ITG Going for Gold autograph at the end of the post has been my #1 most wanted card for years. There aren't many of them floating around and I finally got my hands on one. It has inspired me to expand my women's autograph collection to try and get one of each player who has been a member of the USA or Canada national teams.

Dollard St. Laurent
With so few certified autographs on the market and such a great signature, this Dollard St. Laurent is my first star of the post. The defenceman won the Stanley Cup with the Habs in 1953, 1956, 1957 and 1958. He was later sold to Chicago and helped the Blackhawks capture the 1961 Stanley Cup.

Marc Tardif
Marc Tardif started and finished his career in the NHL but had his best seasons while playing in the WHA.  He scored 71 goals for the 1975/76 Quebec Nordiques. Tardif won the Stanley Cup in 1971 and 1973 with Montreal.  When the Quebec Nordiques joined the NHL he became's the franchise's first NHL captain.  He was later named to the 1982 NHL All-Star team.

Darcy Rota
Darcy Rota made his NHL debut with the 1973/1974 Chicago Blackhawks.  His best years, however, were his last three while playing with Vancouver.  He helped them reach the 1982 Stanley Cup finals, scored a career high 42 goals in 1982/83 and then made the 1983/84 NHL All-Star team.  A neck injury he suffered in 1984 prematurely ended his career.

Pat Price
In 1974 Pat Price was one of hockey's best paid players.  As an 18 year old projected superstar he signed a $1.3 million dollar deal with the WHA's Vancouver Blazers. Price never meet the high expectations set out for him and left the team after just 1 season.  He managed a respectable NHL career, playing well over 700 games between 1975 and 1988. This particular ITG Franchises autograph seems to be more limited than most of the set's signature so I'm really glad to knock it off my list.

Yuri Babenko
A long time pro hockey player in Russia, Yuri Babenko spent a few years in North America and dressed in 3 NHL games with the 2000/2001 Colorado Avalanche. I really like this KHL card, with Babenko hoisting the Gagarin Cup.

Alexander Boikov
Between 1999 and 2001 Russian defenceman Alexander Boikov played 10 games in the NHL with the Nashville Predators.

Taylor Hall
The price of 2010 1st overall pick Taylor Hall's certified autographs slowly dropped all summer to the point where I was able to buy one at a very reasonable price. Ironically, I won a cheap Jordan Eberle autograph the same day but I'm currently having issues with the seller, who I do not believe shipped me the card.

Eddie Lack
Lack was an undrafted Swedish goalie when the Canucks signed him.  In 2013/14 he not only played his first NHL game, but assumed the #1 role in net with the Canucks after Luongo was traded. This autograph and the next 3 came from a local card show here in Halifax.

Danny DeKeyser
Defenceman Danny DeKeyser was a highly courted undrafted college player when he was signed by the Detroit Red Wings in 2013. The late bloomer has already played a full season of NHL hockey.

Josh Leivo
Josh Leivo was a 3rd round pick by the Leafs in 2011.  He scored a goal and 2 points through 7 games with the 2013/2014 Leafs.

Alexander Semin
The Capitals selected Alex Semin 13th overall in the 2002 NHL draft. He's scored well over 200 goals in the NHL, including 40 with the 2009/10 Capitals. He was a member of Russia's 2010 Olympic team.

Michael Sgarbossa
Michael Sgarbossa was originally an undrafted free agent signing by the San Jose Sharks. He was traded to Colorado before ever dressing with San Jose.  He was held pointless in 6 NHL games with the 2012/2013 Avalanche.

Jordan Szwarz
Drafted by Phoenix in 2009, Jordan Szwarz scored 3 goals in 26 games with the 2013/2014 Coyotes.

Brandon Kozun
The next three cards come from my stash of junior autographs. All 3 players just made their NHL debuts at the start of the 2014/2015 season. Brandon Kozun was drafted by the LA Kings back in 2009 and was traded to the Leafs last season.  He spent 5 years in the AHL before getting a crack at the big leagues.

Griffin Reinhart
Selected 4th overall by the Islanders in 2012, Griffin Reinhart is a big defenceman. He helped his junior team capture the 2014 Memorial Cup.  He comes from a hockey family, his father was a long time NHLer and both of his brothers have played in the league.

Calvin Pickard
A second round pick by the Avalanche in 2010, Calvin Pickard joined Colorado early into the season after a string of injuries left the team with a hole in net. His older brother, Chet, was a first round Predators' pick but never started a game in net at the NHL level.

Keith McCreary
Between 1962 and 1975 Keith McCreary played well over 500 games in the NHL.  In 1972 he became the first captain of the newly created Atlanta Flames. He died of cancer in 2003.

Matt Campanale
Matt Campanale was signed by the Islanders in 2011 as an undrafted University of New Hampshire alumni.  The defenceman played 1 NHL game with the 2010/2011 Islanders.

Cole Jarrett
A "one game wonder," Cole Jarrett played a single NHL game with the 2005/2006 New York Islanders. He's spent the last few seasons playing pro hockey in Austria.

Bert Robertsson
Swedish defenceman Bert Robertsson played well over 100 games in the NHL between 1997 and 2001. He played with the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers.

Mike Needham
Between 1992 and 1994 Mike Needham played 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He suited up with the Penguins and Dallas Stars. He made his NHL debut during the 1992 playoffs with Pittsburgh and dressed in 5 games through their successful Cup run. Those 5 games earned Needham a Stanley Cup ring and his name engraved on the trophy.

Par Djoos
Between 1990 and 1993 Djoos played 82 games in the NHL.  The Swedish defenceman collected 33 points from the blueline while playing with the Red Wings and Rangers.

Craig Endean
This was one was a little odd because Endean only signed the back of the card I had sent him and I don't know why.  I double checked the picture used and it was certainly him so I can't figure it out. To remedy the situation I just made this new card and inserted the autograph.  Craig Endean played just 2 games in the NHL, both with the 1986/87 Winnipeg Jets.

Doug Horbul
Doug Horbul scored a goal in 4 NHL games with the 1974/1975 Kansas City Scouts.

Randy Rota
Randy Rota played over 200 NHL games between 1972 and 1977.  He dressed for the Canadiens, Kings, Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies. Rota recorded 38 goals and 77 points in the NHL before ending his career with the WHA's Edmonton Oilers.

Brian Ogilvie
Between 1972 and 1979 Brian Ogilvie played 90 games in the NHL, scoring 15 goals and 36 points. He saw time with the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.

Ron Hurst
From 1955 to 1957 Ron Hurst played right wing with the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He scored 9 goals and 16 points in 64 career NHL games.

Fred Shero
A few years ago I had bought a program from a celebrity dinner that took place during the 1970s.  It was signed by a number of athletes, with Shero being the only hockey personality and signature I wanted.  It was acquired at a great price because Shero wasn't advertised on the auction. I Finally got around to cutting out this signature. Turns out Shero, who passed away in 1990, actually signed it twice so I have an extra lying around. He's best known for coaching the Broad Street Bullies to two Stanley Cups but he did play in the NHL.  Shero played 145 games with the New York Rangers between 1947 and 1950.

Pete Goegan
Between 1957 and 1968 defenceman Pete Goegan played over 400 regular season+playoff games in the NHL.  He spent most of his career with the Red Wings but ended his NHL career with the newly formed Minnesota North Stars. He passed away in 2008.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brian Burke
On a whim I bought a couple cheap Canucks programs that were signed by a number of home and visiting players.  The signatures were not very visible on the scans provided, which is why I acquired the programs for so cheap. Turns out I already had all of the player autographs but a couple of executive signatures didn't make it a whole loss. Since Brian Burke was with the Canucks when he signed the program, I made the index match.  I have written to Burke a couple of times with no response so I'm happy to cross his name of my wantlist.  He has been General Manager of the Canucks, Ducks and Leafs.

Michel Bergeron
Michel Bergeron is another person I've written to with no response.  Since I don't have a current address to try him again I'm very happy to add this signature to my coaches collection.  During the 1980s Michel Bergeron was head coach of the Quebec Nordiques and later New York Rangers.

Steve Spott
From 1997 to 2013 Steve Spott coached in the OHL.  He was hired to coach the Leaf's AHL team in 2013 and was recently promoted to an assistant coaching position with the Toronto Maple Leafs. I try and collect the signatures of all NHL coachers and assistant coachers who didn't play in the league.

Troy Ward
Troy Ward started his coaching career with the NCAA in 1985 and worked his way up to the NHL. He spent 3 years as an NHL assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Ward is still coaching, now with the WHL's Vancouver Giants.

Cherie Piper
I have spent years searching for this card.  When a copy finally popped up on ebay I quickly bought it with a best offer. Although I still believe I overpaid a little, I could not be happier.  There aren't many certified women's autographs on the market. A 1998 Esso Nancy Drolet is now #1 on my wantlist. With a slew of new women's autographs in Upper Deck's World Junior Canada product, I hope to be adding more female signatures soon.  Cherie Piper helped Team Canada capture Olympic gold in 2002, 2006 and 2010.

2 Packages, 54 New Autographs

After scanning the whole collection to this site I was able to get an update, accurate total number of NHL signatures. I ended up taking out a number of autographs that I want to upgrade.  The grand total is now officially 4,048 unique player signatures.
This mail post comes from just two packages.  One was from Check Out My Cards and represents a couple of months of buying from the website. I can't say how much I like that they will ship everything together from the States for just $3.  The second package comes from a fellow collector who deals in team issued AHL/IHL cards. He had some signed sets available and I found a few great signatures.

Peter McNab
I check the newly added cards on Check Out My Cards on a regular basis. This card alone made that a worthwhile thing to do. When I saw this card listed at $20 I couldn't hit the buy it now button fast enough. I've been searching for the card a long time because its currently Peter McNab's only certified autograph. It's a very limited autograph card and the couple I've tracked on ebay went for a lot more than what I paid. McNab is a former NHL All-Star who twice scored 40+ goals in a season. His father, Max, also played in the NHL and that signature is still on my want list.

Ron Francis
Ron Francis was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. He won the Stanley Cup twice with Pittsburgh, won the Lady Byng Trophy 3 times, the King Clancy Trophy, the Frank J. Selke Trophy and was named to the NHL All-Star team 4 times. He's currently the general manager of the Hurricanes. Considering how long he was an NHL star, Francis doesn't have a ton of autographs on the market.

Bernie Federko
Bernie Federko holds numerous St. Louis Blues team records such as most career points, assists and games played. He scored 1130 points in 1000 career regular season games. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.

Craig Ramsay
Upper Deck recently released Craig Ramsay's first certified autogrpah in their Classics set. Ramsay played over 1000 NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres between 1971 and 1985. He's notable for being named to the NHL All-Star team in 1976 and in 1985 he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward. He won a Stanley Cup in 2004 as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Stan Smyl
As a junior hockey player Stan Smyl won the Memorial Cup in 1977 and 1978 with the New Westminster Bruins. In 1978 he was named Memorial Cup MVP. He spent his entire NHL career with the Vancouver Canucks, holding team captaincy from 1982-1990.

David Lumley
Dave Lumley played nearly 500 regular season+playoff games in the NHL between 1978 and 1987. As an Edmonton Oiler he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985.  This is is Lumley's first certified autograph, from an Upper Deck set featuring only the Oilers.

Jiri Crha
Czech goalie Jiri Crha was member of the Toronto Maple Leafs for two seasons, from 1979 to 1981. He appeared in 69 NHL games over that span.

Tim Thomas
Tim Thomas won the Vezina twice and in 2011 also won the Conn Smythe Trophy and Stanley Cup. His career is a great story, the unconventional American goalie spent many years in Europe before establishing himself as an NHL goalie.

Tuukka Rask
In 2014 Tuukka Rask won the Vezina Trophy, was named a first team NHL All-Star and guided Finland to an Olympic bronze medal. He won the Stanley Cup in 2011 as a the Bruins' backup goalie.

Jonathan Quick
Jonathan Quick has been one of the leagues best goalies since winning the 2012 Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy. He won his second Stanley Cup last season and also captured the Williams Jennings Trophy.

Semyon Varlamov
Despite his recent legal issues, Semyon Varlamov has one of the league's best goalies lately.  The 2006 first round Capitals pick represented Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Darrin Madeley
For a long time I wasn't sure if this card existed. It's Madeley's only certified autograph and I'm happy to finally knock it off the wantlist. These 1992 Classic autographs are certified on the back and can be hard to find. I'm still searching for a Jean-Yves Roy autograph from the same set. Darrin Madeley was a college star who played 39 NHL games with the Ottawa Senators between 1992 and 1995.

Adam Munro
A first round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2001, Adam Munro appeared in 17 NHL games with the club between 2003 and 2006.

Jeff Skinner
Jeff Skinner won the 2012 Calder Trophy but playing in Carolina has lowered the value of his autograph to the point where I was able to land this one at a great price.

James Van Riemsdyk
James Van Riemsdyk was drafted 2nd overall by the Flyers in 2007. He represented the United States at the 2014 Winter Olympics. His younger brother, Trevor, recently made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks.

Kristopher Letang
Kris Letang is a 3 time NHL All-Star who helped Pittsburgh win the 2009 Stanley Cup. He was a 2013 Norris Trophy finalist and recently signed a huge 8-year contract with the Penguins.

Ryan Kesler
Ryan Kesler scored 41 goals for the 2010/2011 Vancouver Canucks, was named an NHL All-Star and was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy at season's end. He won an Olympic silver medal with Team USA in 2010.

Adam Henrique
Adam Henrique has played over 200 games with the Devils since making his debut during the 2010/2011 NHL season. He won the Memorial Cup twice with the Windsor Spitfires as a junior player,   2009 and 2010.  He was named a finalist for the 2012 Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.

Eric Staal
The oldest of the Staal brothers, Eric was drafted 2nd overall by the Hurricanes in 2003. The 4 time NHL All-Star is a member of "Triple Gold Club," having won a Stanley Cup, Olympic Gold and World Championship.

Rick Nash
Notable accomplishments of Rick Nash include being drafted 1st overall in 2002, winning the 2004 Rocket Richard Trophy, being named an NHL All-Star 5 times and winning 2 Olympic Gold medals with Team Canada, 2010 and 2014.

Jeff Hamilton
Jeff Hamilton scored 32 goals and 77 points in 157 career NHL games. He played for the Islanders, Blackhawks, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs. Hamilton doesn't have many certified autographs on the market.

Jordin Tootoo
The first Inuk player to play in the NHL, Jordin Tootoo recently released a book about his difficult life. He has played well over 500 games in the NHL, most with the Nashville Predators.

Cory Conacher
Cory Conacher made his way to the NHL as an undrafted college grad. He has played 3 years of NHL hockey and has dressed with the Lightning, Senators, Sabres and Islanders.

Damien Brunner
Damien Brunner came to the NHL as a 26 year old free agent, having played a number of season of pro hockey in the Swiss leagues. Brunner played a year in Detroit and then signed with the New Jersey Devils. He represented Switzerland at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Charlie Coyle
Charlie Coyle was a San Jose Sharks first round pick in 2010 but was traded to the Minnesota Wild before he made his NHL debut. He's already played well over 100 games with the Wild and was recently signed to a new 5 year contract.

Kevin Henderson
An undrafted forward, Kevin Henderson took an unusual route to the NHL. After his junior career was over he spent a couple of season at the University of New Brunswick before starting his pro career.  Few Canadian University players end up in the NHL these days but Henderson played 4 games with the 2012/2013 Nashville Predators, scoring 1 goal.

Tyler Pitlick
Tyler Pitlick appeared in 10 NHL games with the 2013/2014 Edmonton Oilers. He's the nephew of former NHL player Lance Pitlick. With Panini no longer producing hockey cards I'm going to miss shiny cards like this.

Steve Oleksy
Steve Oleksy has played 60+ games in the NHL with the Washington Capitals since 2012/2013. The undrafted defenceman spent time at Lake Superior State University before embarking on a pro career.

Jonathan Rheault
Providence College grad Jon Rheault played 5 games in the NHL with the 2012/2013 Florida Panthers.

Hampus Lindholm
A big defenceman from Sweden, Hampus Lindholm was selected 6th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2012 NHL draft. He was named to the 2013/2014 NHL All-Rookie team.

Magnus Hellberg
The first goalie picked in the 2011 NHL draft, Magnus Hellberg appered in 1 game with the 2013/2013 Nashville Predators.

Maxime Macenauer
Maxime Macenauer played 29 NHL games with the 2011/2012 Anaheim Ducks. The forward scored 1 goal and 4 points.

Andrei Kostitsyn
Belarus native Andrei Kostitsyn was drafted 10th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2003. He scored 20+ goals in a season 3 times as a Canadien.

Anton Belov
The Edmonton Oilers signed Russian Anton Belov as an undrafted free agent. The defenceman only lasted a year in North America, playing 57 games with the 2013/2014 Oilers.

Kevin Connauton
Kevin Connauton was drafted by the Canucks but traded to the Stars in a deal that sent Derek Roy the other way. He made his NHL debut in 2013 and has already played over 40 games with the Stars.

Jesper Fast
Swedish forward Jesper Fast has played over a dozen games with the New York Rangers since making his NHL debut with the team in 2013/14.

Marcus Kruger
Forward Marcus Kruger has played over 200 games with the Blackhawks since 2010. He helped the Hawks win the 2013 Stanley Cup and in 2014 helped Sweden capture an Olympic silver medal.

Carson McMillan
Since 2010/2011 Carson McMillan has played 16 games with the Minnesota Wild, scoring 2 goals and 5 points.

Zack Kassian
Zack Kassian was drafted 13th overall by the Sabres in 2009. He was traded to the Canucks for Cody Hodgson in 2012.

Alan Kerr
How great are these team issued New York Islanders cards? I think they're hilarious. Between 1984 and 1993 Alan Kerr played over 400 regualar season+playoff games in the NHL. He scored 20+ goals in a season twice with the New York Islanders.

Roger Kortko
From 1984 to 1986 Roger Kortko played 79 regular season and 11 playoff games in the NHL with the New York Islanders.

Randy Boyd
"Take the damn picture already." Poor Randy Boyd does not look impressed here. Between 1981 and 1989 he played 250+ NHL games between the Penguins, Blackhawks, Islanders and Canucks.

Steve Fletcher
Steven Fletcher appeared in 1 playoff game with the 1987/88 Montreal Canadiens and 3 regular season games with the 1988/89 Winnipeg Jets.

Dale Craigwell
Between 1991 and 1994 Dale Craigwell appeared in 98 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks.

Dan Ratushny
Dan Ratushny played 1 game in the NHL with the 1992/1993 Vancouver Canucks. He's also notable for winning an Olympic silver medal in 1992 with Team Canada.

Jason Cirone
Jason Cirone appeared in 3 NHL games with the 1991/1992 Winnipeg Jets. He played a number of years of pro hockey in Italy, getting his citizenship and dressing for the country at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Scott Fraser
A Dartmouth College alumni, Scott Fraser played 72 regular season and 11 playoff games in the NHL. Between 1995 and 1999 he dressed with the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers.

Ken Hammond
Between 1985 and 1993 Ken Hammond played just over 200 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He was well travelled, having dressed in the NHL with the Kings, Oilers, Rangers, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Sharks, Canucks and Senators.

Gary Emmons
Gary Emmons scored 1 goal in 3 career NHL games with the 1993/1994 San Jose Sharks.

John Purves
John Purves scored 1 goal in 7 career NHL games with the 1990/1991 Washington Capitals.

Mark Mowers
I'm guessing that they were a little short on Mark Mower pictures when they produced this set. There aren't many cards with poorer shots.  To make it even worse, the head shot used on the reverse is from the same picture. An undrafted University of New Hampshire alumni, Mark Mowers played almost 300 games in the NHL between 1998 and 2008. He suited up with the Predators, Red Wings, Bruins and Ducks.

Perry Ganchar
Between 1983 and 1989 Perry Ganchar played 49 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He dressed for the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Peter Taglianetti
Peter Taglianetti is most notable for being a member of the 1991 and 1992 Pittsburgh Penguins, who won the Stanley Cup both years. The defenceman played over 500 regular season+playoff games in the NHL.

Scott Harlow
A Boston College alumni, Scott Harlow was originally drafted by the Canadiens in 1982. He played just 1 game in the NHL. He picked up an assist in that game, with the 1987/88 St. Louis Blues. He has recently worked as a scout for the Edmonton Oilers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Larry Dyck
Larry Dyck appeared in 5 NHL games as a backup goalie between 1992 and 1996. He dressed with the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks.

Terry Simpson
Between 1986 and 1996 Terry Simpson spent time as head coach of the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and Winnipeg Jets. He later served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1996 to 1998.

Trevor Gretzky
I have a small stash of autographed baseball cards that have some kind of link to the great game of hockey. The link here is obvious, Trevor is Wayne's son. He plays pro baseball and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. I still have to land a Tom Glavine autograph to highlight this little baseball collection.

Bert Olmstead
In the 14 seasons Bert Olmstead played in the NHL his team reached the Stanley Cup finals an increadible 11 times. He was on the winning side 5 times. After his playing career was over he became a head coach and general manager with the newly minted Oakland Seals. Olmstead was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.

Scott Stevens
Over 22 seasons in the NHL Scott Stevens was named to 14 NHL All-Star teams, won the Stanley Cup 3 times, won the 2000 Conn Smythe Trophy and in 2007 was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. For someone who spent so much time in the league he doesn't have many certified autographs on the market.

Doug Gilmour
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011, Doug Gilmour was captain of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks during his illustrious career. He won a Stanley Cup in 1989, was a 2 time NHL All-Star and claimed the 1993 Frank J. Selke Trophy.

Kevin Dineen
Kevin Dineen played well over 1000 games in the NHL between 1984 and 2002. The two time NHL All-Star spent time as captain the Philadelphia Flyers and Hartford Whalers / Carolina Hurricanes. He was recently head coach of the Florida Panthers and is currently an assistant with the Blackhawks. In 2014 he coached the Canadian women to an Olympic gold media. His father, Bill, and brothers, Peter and Gord, have also played in the NHL.

Dale McCourt
The Detroit Red Wings drafted Dale McCourt with the 1st overall pick of the 1977 NHL draft. He was a junior sensation who was named the 1977 CHL Player of the Year and a year before that had captained his team to the Memorial Cup championship. He played well over 500 games in the NHL between the Red Wings, Sabres and Maple Leafs. This is is first certified autograph card.

Jason Krog
Since this happens to be Jason Krog's only certified autograph card, it was on my want list for a long time. Between 1999 and 2009 he played over 200 NHL games. Krog played for the Islanders, Mighty Ducks, Thrashers, Rangers and Canucks. He's notable for winning the 1999 Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA's most valuable player.

Jason Spezza
The Senators drafted Jason Spezza 2nd overall in 2001.  He was a point per game player through nearly 700 regular season games with Ottawa before being dealt to the Dallas Stars. He is a two time NHL All-Star.

Mark Scheifele
Mark Scheifele was selected 7th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2011. He nearly made the team as an 18 year old and played 7 regular season games for the 11/12 Jets before returning to junior. As the Jets' top prospect his autograph was selling very well. After a couple of years in the NHL his value has fallen and I was able to land this for just a few dollars.

Chris Kreider
The Rangers selected Chris Kreider in the 1st round of the 2009 draft, 19th overall. He joined the 2011/12 Rangers after his Boston College season had finished and played 18 playoff games before making his regular season debut the following season.

Viktor Fasth
Viktor Fasth came to the NHL as a 30 year old free agent from Sweden in 2012. He has played almost 50 NHL games between the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers.

Cristopher Nilstorp
Swedish goalie Cristopher Nilstorp was signed by the Dallas Stars as a 28 year old free agent in 2012. He spent 2 years in North America, playing in 6 NHL games with the Stars. He backstopped the Texas Stars to the 2014 AHL Calder Cup championship.

Derek Stepan
Derek Stepan has over 200 points in 5 seasons with the New York Rangers. He played on Team USA's 2014 men's Olympic hockey team.

Ryan Stanton
Defenseman Ryan Stanton is in his second season as a full time member of the Vancouver Canucks. Before being claimed off waivers by the Canucks, Stanton had played 1 NHL game with the 2012/2013 Chicago Blackhawks. On a side note, I really like these NHL INK cards. I already miss new Panini hockey cards.

Brian Lashoff
The Detroit Red Wings signed Brian Lashoff as a free agent defenseman. He spent 5 seasons in the OHL then turned pro in 2011. He's played well over 100 NHL games with the Red Wings.

Michael Grabner
The Vancouver Canucks drafted Michael Grabner with the 14th overall pick of the 2006 NHL draft. He only played 20 games with the Canucks before being dealt to the Florida Panthers in 2010. He was waived by Florida before ever playing for them and claimed by the Islanders. In his first season with New York, 2010/11, he scored 34 goals and 52 points. It established himself in the league and he has been a member of the Islanders ever since. He was chosen to represented Austria at the 2014 winter Olympics.

Matt Konan
In 2012 the Philadelphia Flyers signed free agent defenseman Matt Konan to a 3 year entry-level contract. He had played 5 seasons in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Konan appeared in 2 NHL games with the 2012/2013 Flyers.

Jamie Tardif
Defenseman Jamie Tardif was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2003. He never signed with the team and spent many years in the AHL, mostly with the Red Wings' organization. He signed with the Bruins in 2011 and went on to play 2 NHL games with the club, both during the 2012/2013 season. He currently plays pro hockey in Germany.

Tye McGinn
Tye McGinn spent a couple seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. In the summer of 2013 was traded to the Sharks and has been a full time member of the 2014/15 team. Brother Jamie plays for the Colorado Avalanche.

Matt Tennyson
Free agent Matt Tennyson signed with San Jose after 3 years at Western Michigan University. He played 4 NHL games with the 2012/2013 San Jose Sharks.

Oliver Lauridsen
Defenseman Oliver Lauridsen played 15 games with the 2012/2013 Philadelphia Flyers, scoring 2 goals and 3 points. He has represented Denmark at the Ice Hockey World Championships.

Robb Gordon
Robb Gordon played 4 NHL games with the 1998/1999 Vancouver Canucks. He won a gold medal at the 1996 World Juniors with Canada.

Jim Paek
Jim Paek was born in Seoul, Korea but raised in Canada. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins, 1991 and 1992.

Philippe Bozon
When Philippe Bozon suited up for the 1991/1992 St. Louis Blue he became the first NHLer born and trained in France. Since then only 3 other French players have made the league. Bozon played 144 regular season games with the Blues, scoring 16 goals and 41 points.

Brian Glynn
Between 1987 and 1997 Brian Glynn played well over 400 games in the NHL between the Flames, North Stars, Oilers, Senators, Canucks and Whalers. He played 9 regular season games with the 1989 Flames, not enough to get his name on the Stanley Cup. In 1994 he was a member of the Canucks' squad that reached the Cup finals.

Curt Giles
Curt Giles spent a couple seasons as captain of the North Stars. In 1992 he left the NHL to participate in the Olympics and helped Canada win a silver medal. Between 1979 and 1993 he played nearly 1000 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He played with the North Stars, Rangers and Blues.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edward Pasquale
Ed Pasquale dressed in 11 NHL games with the 2012/2013 Winnipeg Jets as a backup goalie. He recently signed with the Washington Capitals.

Kurtis Mucha
Kurtis Mucha was signed on an emergency basis March 4, 2014 by the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers had just trade Bryzgalov and a new backup wasn't able to make the game that night. At the time Mucha was playing with the University of Alberta. Full story here.

Arts, Crafts & 61 New Autographs

$

Over the past few months I have temporarily taken a break from sending to players in order to finish organizing the collection. I had made a small pile of plain autographs awaiting to be doctored into something more interesting. I don't put plain signed index cards into the collection because I like having a picture of the player to accompany the signature. For the past month or so, I've been making custom index cards with the signatures and slowly adding them to the appropriate 'a year in autographs' post. The pile is gone and I have a bunch of new graphs to show. With these 61 new autographs added the grand total now stands at 4,134 unique NHL signatures.
When making the custom cards I try and use a picture of the player wearing the jersey # he might have signed. If he used a junior number then I may opt to use the NHL pic anyway. For guys with no numbers on the signature, I just go for either the best picture I can find or the team the player made his debut with.
I picked up these autographs because they were either cheap, have tried multiple times writing the player or the player has passed away. Although I would rater write to the player, If I can get a signed index I know to be real that saves on time and money then I have a hard time saying no. With the latest hike by Canada Post I can now only afford to send to a select number of players each month.
Most are the customs are the size of a standard index card. A few had to made larger because the autograph was too big. The first few autographs are from a team signed sheet of the 1999/2000 AHL Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. The next few are from a Chicago Blackhawks old timers game program signed by numerous players. After that most are from blank index cards, scrapbook/newspaper clippings or other boring, pictureless autographs.
I'm currently working on a couple more mail posts, one of TTM autographs and the other new certified autographs I picked up, most from the recent Check Out My Cards sale.

B.J. Young
This signature is the reason I purchased a team signed 99/00 Cincinnati Ducks page. B.J. Young died tragically young in a 2005 automobile accident so his autograph is difficult to find. He played 1 NHL game with the 1999/2000 Detroit Red Wings.

Darryl Laplante
Between 1997 and 2000 Darryl Laplante played 35 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings. He recorded 6 assists and 10 penalty minutes. The Wild claimed Laplante from the Red Wings in the 2000 expansion draft but he never dressed for Minnesota.

Dwayne Zinger
Undrafted defenseman Dwayne Zinger played 7 games with the 2003/2004 Washington Capitals as a 28 year old rookie. He recorded 1 assist and 9 penalty minutes in the NHL.

Jeff Mitchell
Originally drafted by the LA Kings in 1993, Jeff Mitchell played 7 NHL games with the 1997/1998 Dallas Stars. I had just sent a letter to Mr. Mitchell so If I ever get that one back then I'll replace this one in the collection.

Bob Wren
High scoring centerman Bob Wren played five career NHL games. He saw three with the 97/98 Ducks, one with the 00/01 Ducks and one with the 01/02 Maple Leafs. The 40 year old is still playing pro in Germany.

Joel Kwiatkowski
Between 2000 and 2008 Joel Kwiatkowski played nearly 300 games in the NHL. He spent time with the Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Atlanta Thrashers. He's currently playing pro in Switzerland.

Maxim Balmochnykh
Russian forward Maxim Balmochnyhk played 6 games with the 1999/2000 Anaheim Mighty Ducks and recorded 1 assist. This is an early Russian version of his signature and I might pick up a more recent autograph if I ever get the chance.

Keith Magnuson
The next few autographs come from an early 1990s Blackhawks alumni game program. I had bought it years ago for very cheap and have finally got around to cutting it up and placing the autographs in their appropriate binders. Of a dozen signatures on the program, most I already had and will join my large pile of extra autographs. Keith Magnuson does have a couple of rare and expensive certified autographs and will remain on my wantlist in that category but this signature will do nicely for now. He spent his entire career with the Blackhawks, playing in Chicago from 1969 to 1989. In 2003 he died in a car accident.

Reg Fleming
Between 1959 and 1971 Reg Fleming played 799 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He was a well known tough guy around the league and dressed with the Habs, Hawks, Bruins, Rangers, Flyers and Sabres. He helped the Chicago Blackhawks claim the 1961 Stanley Cup championship. Fleming passed away in 2009.

Pit Martin
From 1961 to 1979 Pit Martin played well over 1,000 games in the NHL. From 1975 to 1977 he was captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Martin was a four time NHL All-Star and won the 1970 Bill Masterton Trophy. In 2008 he died in a snowmobile accident.

Ivan Boldirev
From 1970 to 1985 Ivan Boldirev played well over 1,000 games in the NHL. He scored 20+ goals a season nine times over his career and played in the 1978 NHL All-Star game. He spent time with the Bruins, Golden Seals, Blackhawks, Flames, Canucks and Red Wings.

Anton Klementyev
Anton Klementyev played 1 NHL game with the 2009/2010 New York Islanders. The defenseman's only game with the Islanders came when he was recalled on emergency basis. He's an interesting case because after being waived by New York in 2012 he basically fell off the hockey radar and went on to play low level pro in Russia.

Boyd Kane
From 2003 to 2010 Boyd Kane played 31 games in the NHL between the Flyers and Capitals. He was originally drafted by the Penguins in 1996.

Oleg Mikulchik
Russian defenseman Oleg Mikulchik made his NHL debut with the 1993/1994 Winnipeg Jets as a 29 year old rookie. The defensemen had spent the first part of his career playing in the Soviet Union. He played 37 career NHL games, last seeing time with the 1995/1996 Ducks.

Derek Mayer
Originally drafted by the Red Wings in 1986, Derek Mayer spend time in the IHL and AHL before having a huge 1993/1994 season. That year he dressed with Team Canada at the '94 Olympics and later joined the Senators to play 17 NHL games. He scored 2 goals and 4 points with the Sens.

Rod Buskas
From 1982 to 1993 Rod Buskas played well over 500 games in the NHL. He spent the majority of that time with the Pittsburgh Penguins but also dressed with the Canucks, Kings and Blackhawks.

Mike Casselman
Mike Casselman played 3 NHL games with the 1995/1996 Florida Panthers. Surprisingly, I wasn't able to find a single picture of him with the Panthers.

Blair Chapman
From 1976 to 1983 Blair Chapman played well over 400 games in the NHL between the Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues. The high scoring junior player was selected 2nd overall by the Pens in the 1976 NHL draft. He was also selected 1st overall by Edmonton Oilers in the 1976 WHA draft but opted not to join the rebel league.

He spent his entire NHL career with the New York Islanders, playing over 600 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He won the Stanley Cup four times in Long Island, two as a player and two as a coach. Henning has coached for the Islanders, Stars, Blackhawks and Mighty Ducks. Defenseman Paul Jerrard played 5 NHL games with the 1988/1989 Minnesota North Stars. In 2002/2003 he served as an NHL assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche. From 2011-2013 he returned to the big leagues as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars.

Scott Gruhl
Between 1981 and 1988 Scott Gruhl played 20 games in the NHL, scoring 3 goals and 6 points. He dressed with the LA Kings from 1981-83 and had a brief stint with the 1987/88 Penguins. Although his NHL career was short, in 1996 he retired as one of the top scorers in pro hockey history. In 871 regular season IHL games he scored 532 goals and 1,144 points.

Jack Brownschidle
Between 1977 and 1986 Jack Brownschidle played nearly 500 regular season games in the NHL. The defenseman spent most of that time in St. Louis but finished his career with the Hartford Whalers.

Mike O'Connell
I met Mike O'Connell when I was a youngster and had him sign a hat and jersey, at the time he was General Manager of the Boston Bruins. Since I need a flat copy to go into my binders, I can finally cross his name of my wantlist with this one. Between 1977 and 1990 Mike O'Connell played 860 regular season games in the NHL. The defenseman played in the 1984 NHL All-Star game. From 2000-2006 he was GM of the Boston Bruins. His father, Tommy, was an NFL quarterback.

Ed Kea

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On top of the 61 NHL autographs I also added 4 'other' hockey signatures to my collection.

Murray Heatley
Dany Heatley's father, Murray, spent three seasons in the WHA. Between 1973 and 1976 he played with the Minnesota Fighting Saints and Indianapolis Racers. He scored 48 goals and 102 points in 156 WHA games. Dany Heatley was born in Germany because in 1981 that is where Murray was playing pro hockey.

Mike Ford
Between 1974 and 1977 Mike Ford played well over 200 games in the WHA. He played with the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Cowboys. He won the league championship with Bobby Hull's 1976 Jets.

Jim Clark
Jim Clark has possibly the shortest NHL General Manager career in the history of the league. He temporarily took the job when Doug McLean was relieved of his duties. Clark is a native of my hometown province, Prince Edward Island, and I was able to get this signature in person years ago. It was surprisingly hard to find a Columbus era picture of him and I had to settle for this grainy black and white.

Don MacAdam
Like Jim Clark, Don MacAdam is a Prince Edward Island native who I was also able to meet in person years ago. I had him sign a generic Red Wings logo card. From 1986 to 1989 he was an assistant coach with the Red wings. Since I have been organizing my NHL head and assistant coaches I decided to finally make the autograph into my generic index design. Stay tuned for a couple of collection posts of my NHL head and assistant coaches.

TTM Mail - 44 New Graphs

The amount of letters I send out has stalled a little due mostly to the ridiculous cost of postage these days. Since I started writing to players a little over 10 years ago, I was sending at half the cost, HALF the cost. Service at Canada Post is a topic I could rant about all day. I actually get surprised when I deal with a worker who knows even a little bit about the postal system. It leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth that takes some fun out of the hobby. With that said, there is little more I enjoy than opening my self addressed stamped envelops knowing it could be any one of the thousands of requests I have out.
Every now and then I'll get a letter back that I sent out years ago.
The 44 new autographs in this post pushes my grand total of unique signatures to 4,180. I'm setting my goal this year at 4,500 by 2016.
When I find the time I'll be publishing another mail post with my newly acquired certified autographs.

38 new autographed cards to show, most received during December. The grand total now stands at 4,218 unique NHL player signatures.
A lot of the 2012/2013 rookie crop autographs have been dropping into my price range lately and most I can get for little more that a dollar. The first three autographs of the post actually set me back more than the rest of the graphs put together.

Teemu Selanne
Teemu Selanne is a future Hockey Hall of Famer who has a large trophy cabinet. He's a 10 time NHL All-Star, Calder Trophy winner, Rocket Richard Trophy winner, Bill Masterton Trophy winner and Stanley Cup champion. He has a large fan base and his autographs always demand a premium.

Pavel Datsyuk
For a player of his caliber, Pavel Datsyuk doesn't have a ton of certified autographs on the market. I got this nice looking card for substatially below the going price for a normal Datsyuk signature. He's a two time Stanley Cup champion, 3 time Frank Selke Trophy winner and 4 time Lady Byng Trophy winner.

Henrik Lundqvist
Henrik Lundqvist has a solid fan following and I had to wait a long time to snag a signature at a price I was satisfied with. Lundqvist is a five time NHL All-Star, 2012 Vezina winner, 2006 Olympic gold medalist and 2014 Olympic silver medalist.

Rod Langway
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002, Rod Langway has a long resume. He was captain of the Washington Capitals from 1982 to 1993. He won the Norris Trophy in 1983 and 1984, was a six time NHL All-Star and in 1979 won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Montreal Canadiens.

Rob Ramage
Defenceman Rob Ramage was drafted 1st overall in the 1979 NHL draft. He won the Stanley Cup twice, in 1989 (Flames) and 1993 (Habs).  Ramage was captain of the Colorado Rockies from 1981 to 1982 and captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1989 to 1991. He also played in four NHL All-Star games.

Kelly Kisio
Kelly Kisio was a reliable scorer who scored 20+ goals in a season 8 times during his career. From 1987 to 1991 he was captain of the New York Rangers. In 1993 he represented the San Jose Sharks at the NHL All-Star game.

Aaron Broten
In 2008 Aaron Broten was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. He was a long time New Jersey Devil who played 748 regular season games in the NHL between 1981 and 1992.

Charlie Huddy
Charlie Huddy is most notable for being a member of all 5 of the Edmonton Oilers' Stanley Cup winning teams. He played well over 1,000 NHL games between 1980 and 1997. He's spent the last 14 seasons as an NHL assistant coach and is currently with the Winnipeg Jets.

Nikolai Borschevsky
Nikolai Borshevsky was a long time Soviet player when he came to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1992. Earlier that year he won an Olympic gold medal with Russia. Between 1992 and 1996 he scored 49 goals and 123 points in 162 regular season NHL games.

Niklas Kronwall
Long time Red Wing defenceman Niklas Kronwall is a member of the Triple Gold Club. He won a Stanley Cup in 2008, Olympic gold in 2006 and a World Championship in 2006. He also won an Olmpic silver medal in 2014 with Sweden.

Oskars Bartulis
Between 2009 and 2011 Oskars Bartulis played 66 games in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. The defenceman represented Latvia at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

Patrik Berglund
Patrik Berglund has been a full time member of the St. Louis Blues since 2008, playing almost 500 NHL games. He won an Olympic Silver medal in 2014 with Sweden.

Ryan Callahan
Ryan Callahan was captain of the New York Rangers from 2011 to 2014. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the trade that saw Martin St. Louis going the other way. Callahan is also notable for winning a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics with the USA.

Tomas Plekanec
Czech native Tomas Plekanec has been a member of the Montreal Canadiens since 2003. He has scored nearly 200 goals for the club in just over 700 NHL games.

Jaroslav Halak
Since 2006 Jaroslav Halak has played 300+ games in the NHL. He's spent time with the Canadiens, Blues, Capitals and Islanders. In 2011/2012 Halak shared the Williams M. Jennings Trophy with Brian Elliot. Its awarded to a goalie or tandem of goalies who allowed the fewest goals in the league. Halak also backstopped Slovakia in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics.

Bobby Robins
Bobby Robbins is one of my favourite hockey stories of 2014/15. He has to wait until he was 32 years old to make his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins. He spent four years in college, many years in the AHL, time in Northern Ireland and a year in Austria before getting his big break.

Matt Anderson
Matt Anderson played 2 NHL games with the 2012/2013 New Jersey Devils as a 29 year old rookie. He has spent the last two season in the KHL.

Alex Chiasson
A Boston University alumni, Alex Chiasson made his NHL debut with the 2012/2013 Dallas Stars. In 2013/14 he established himself as a full time NHLer with 35 points in 79 games with the Stars. That summer he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in a deal that saw Jason Spezza going the other way.

Carl Soderberg
Carl Soderberg was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2004 but stayed in Sweden until he was lured away by the Boston Bruins in 2013. He's in his second season as a full time Bruin. In 2013/14 he scored 16 goals and 48 points in 73 games as a 27 year old rookie.

Jonas Brodin
A defenceman from Sweden, Jonas Brodin has quickly become one of the Wild's premier minute crunchers. He was selected 10th overall by the team in 2011 and has already played 150+ NHL games. In 2012 he won a gold medal with Sweden at the World Junior Championships.

Drew LeBlanc
Drew LeBlanc played 2 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks at the end of the 2012/2013 season. He was a free agent signing who had just completed his college career at St. Cloud State.

Chad Ruhwedel
Since 2013 defenceman Chad Ruhwedel has played 28 NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres. He was an undrafted free agent signing from the University of Mass-Lowell.

Jon Merrill
The Devils drafted defenceman Jon Merrill 38th overall in 2010. He made his NHL debut in 2013 and is playing his second season as a New Jersey Devil.

Derek Grant
From 2012 to 2014 Derek Grant played 25 NHL games with the Ottawa Senators.

Vincent Trocheck
Vincent Trocheck won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Championships. Since then he has played almost 50 NHL games with the Florida Panthers.

Ryan Murray
The Columbus Blue Jackets drafted Ryan Murray with the 2nd overall pick of the 2012 NHL draft. He's entering his second season as a full time NHL defeceman. Its not usual for me to be able to pick up an autograph of a 2nd overall pick for as cheap as I got this, just over a dollar.

Tyler Ennis
A first round draft pick in 2008, Tyler Ennis has played well over 300 career NHL games with the Buffalo Sabres. He won a gold medal with Canada at the 2009 World Junior Championships.

Alexei Emelin
Russian defenceman Alexei Emelin has been a full time Hab since making his NHL debut in 2011. He has already played 200+ NHL games.

Jarred Tinordi
Since 2012 defenceman Jarred Tinordi has played 44 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He was the Habs first round pick in 2010. His father, Mark, was a long time NHLer.

Michael Latta
Michael Latta was drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2009 but was traded to the Capitals in a deal that saw Filip Forsberg to the Preds. Latta has played almost 50 games with the Capitals since making his NHL debut in 2013/14.

Matt Dumba
Defenceman Matt Dumba was drafted 7th overall by the Minnesota Wild in 2012. So far he has played 33 NHL games with the Wild.

Scott Laughton
The Philadelphia Flyers selected Scott Laughton with the 20th overall pick of the 2012 NHL draft. He played 5 games with the Flyers as an 18 year old rookie before being returned to the Oshawa Generals. He has spent most of this season with the Flyers.

Cal Heeter
The Flyers acquired Cal Heeter as an undrafted free agent from Ohio State University. He played 1 NHL game for the Flyers during the 2013/2014 season.

Brian Rafalski
I'm not sure why it took me so long to get a common Brian Rafalski autograph. The recently retired defenceman had a great NHL career. He won the Stanley Cup in 2000, 2003 and 2008. He has two winter Olympic silver medals with Team USA, 2002 and 2010. In 2010 he was named the tournament's best defenceman.

Owen Fussey
The next three come from a Prince Albert Raiders autographed set. It represents a grey area in my collecting certified autographs. I'm sure they are from a legitimate team released singed set but they contain no certification information on the reverse to differentiate them from a base set. Owen Fussey played 4 NHL games with the 2003/2004 Washington Capitals.

John Boychuk
Johnny Boychuk has a couple rare Upper Deck certified autograph cards that I will likely pick up in the distant future. This autograph will do fine for now. Boychuk won the Stanley Cup in 2011 as a member of the Boston Bruins. Currently with the Islanders, he has played well over 400 regular season+playoff games in the NHL since 2007.

Jordan Krestanovich
Between 2001 and 2004 Jordan Krestanovich played 22 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche.

Tomas Kundratek
I acquired this autograph from someone who hounds the Cap's AHL team. Tomas Kundratek has played 30 NHL games with the Washington Capitals since 2011. He has no certified autograph.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All three of the last autographs fall into the same category in my other hockey signatures. They all appeared in the NHL but only as backup netminders.

John Muse
John Muse dressed as a backup goalie for 3 NHL games with the Carolina Hurricanes late March 2013.

Joe Cannata
Joe Cannata dressed as backup goalie with the Vancouver Canucks during 4 NHL games in 2013.

Jordan Binnington
Jordan Binnington recently dressed as a backup goalie with the St. Louis Blues.

In 1980 Anders Kallur and his Swede teamate, Stefan Persson, became the first Europeans to win the Stanley Cup. Kallur was a member of all four New York Islanders Cup winning teams. He's been a european scout with the Islanders since 1989. This card is from a 1997 European multi sport set. Its  /2000 on the back. I had known about them but never had the chance to purchase one until now.

Mikko Luoma
A decorated player in the European leagues, Mikko Luoma spent 1 season in North America. He played 3 NHL games with the 2003/2004 Edmonton Oilers and tallied 1 assist.

Ronnie Sundin
Swedish defenceman Ronnie Sundin spent one season in North America. He played 1 NHL game with the 1997/98 New York Rangers and spent the rest of his time in the AHL. No relation to Mats Sundin, Ronnie won an Olympic gold medal in 2006 with Sweden.

Kris Fredheim
Defenceman Kris Fredheim was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in 2005 but was never signed by the team. After 4 years at Colorado College he was offered an NHL contract from the Minnesota Wild. He played 3 NHL games for the Wild during the 2011/2012 season.

Trevor Frischmon
An undrafted Colorado College alumni, Trevor Frischmon played 3 NHL games with the 2009/2010 Columbus Blue Jackets. He later signed with the New York Islanders but was never able to crack their NHL roster.

Dave Morissette
Tough guy Dave Morissette accumulated 57 penalty minutes in 11 career NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens. His claim to fame is winning a fight against Bob Probert. He currently works as a TV hockey analyst in Quebec.

Mike Greenlay
Mike Greenlay appeared in net with the Edmonton Oilers for 2 NHL games during the 1989/1990 season. He's currently a color commentator with the Minnesota Wild.

Kent Paynter
I really like Kent Paynter's inscription here, he's from my home province and lives a short drive away from where I grew up. Between 1987 and 1994 Paynter played 37 regular season games and 4 playoff games in the NHL. He was a member of the Blackhawks, Capitals, Jets and Senators.

Bengt Lundholm
Bengt Lundholm was a member of the Winnipeg Jets from 1981 to 1986. He scored 48 goals and 143 points in 275 career NHL games. Lundholm won an Olympic bronze medal with Sweden in 1980.

Bobby Lemieux
Defenceman Bob Lemieux played 19 NHL games with the 1967/68 Oakland Seals. He was recently featured in a Globe and Mail article about concussions.

Marty Pavelich
As a member of the Detroit Red Wings Marty Pavelich won the Stanley Cup championship in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955. Between 1947 and 1957 he played well over 700 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. At 87 years old he's one of the last remaining players from his generation but he's still got a wonderful signature.

Wayne Maxner
From 1964 to 1966 Wayne Maxner played 62 NHL games with the Boston Bruins. He stepped behind the bench after hanging up his skates and from 1980 to 1982 was head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. A Halifax native, he was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1992.

Gord Turlik
Gordon Turlik was held scoreless in 2 NHL games with the 1959/1960 Boston Bruins.

Hillary Menard
Hillary Menard played 1 NHL game with the 1953/54 Chicago Blackhawks. I thank his brother, Howie, for forwarding me Hillary's address.

Wayne Hicks
Wayne Hicks' 1 regular season and 1 playoff game were enough to get his name engraved on the Stanley Cup as a member of the 1960/61 Chicago Blackhawks. He played 115 regular season games in the NHL between 1960 and 1968. He played for the Blackhawks, Canadiens, Penguins and Flyers. His son, Alex, also played in the NHL.

Just 1 autographs to show this post that falls outside of my NHL player collection.

Bill Evo
Between 1974 and 1976 Bill Evo scored 14 goals and 32 points in 97 career games in the WHA. He played for the Michigan Stags, Edmonton Oilers and Cleveland Crusaders. He wrote me back a nice note staying his favourite memories were playing against Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull.
I now have my entire WHA collection scanned, maybe I should post it soon?

I've managed to add 34 new NHL signatures to the collection since the last post. The grand total of unique NHL player autographs now stands at 4,270. My goal for 2015 is to reach 4,500.

Since the last post, I've gotten a package from COMC.com and a few odds and ends. My favourite addition is a vintage Fred Hunt signature obtained from an old letter. I'm visiting home soon so next mail post should have a number of TTM autographs. As I look at my shrinking wantlist I realized that there are only a few more stars, retired or current, that I need. There are a few glaring holes to be filled by the likes of Crosby, Kane, Toews, Yzerman and Roy. After that, the bulk of it are very obscure or long deceased players. The more obscure, the more challenging it to find a signature but the more rewarding it is when I find one. It looks that an increased amount of my budget will be going towards postage stamps and vintage pieces instead of certified autograph cards.

Thanks to all who have sent me a message or email this past month. Its nice to see there are people who enjoy my blog. I make no effort to publizse this site. I do it all because its my stress relieving hobby.

Ray Bourque
Ray Bourque was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenceman five times, was named an NHL All-Star 19 times and in 2001 won the Stanley Cup. He maintains a strong fan base and his autographs consistently sell well.

Pavel Bure
Russian forward Pavel Bure exploded into the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks and won the 1991/92 Calder Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year. In 1994 he lead NHL in goals scored and lead the Canucks to the Stanley Cup finals. With the Florida Panthers he won the 2000 and 2001 Rocket Richard Trophy. Bure was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012.

Michel Goulet
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998, Michel Goulet netted 50+ goals in a season fours years in a row with the Nordiques. He played over 1000 games in the NHL between 1979 and 1994. As Director of Player Personnel with the Colorado Avalanche, Goulet had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001.

Terry O'Reilly
Terry O'Reilly spent his entire career with the Boston Bruins. He spent a couple season as team captain and returned to the bench as head coach from 1986 to 1989. Know for his tough play, O'Reilly is an all-time fan favourite in Boston.

Clark Gillies
Clark Gillies was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a integral part of New York's Stanley Cup dynasty from 1979 to 1983. He scored 30+ goals in a season six times during his 14 year NHL career.

Matt Duchene
I bought this card from comc.com and didn't realize how thick it was. I may replace it in the future. Even though I like the card, its so thick its hard to store. I like having my autographs in binders vs boxes because I like looking through them. This will still go in the binder with all the other rookies that made their debuts during the 2009/10 season but like other thick cards, its a pain to store. Drafted 3rd overall by the Avalanche in 2009, Duchene was a member of Team Canada's 2014 Olympic gold medal winning team at Sochi.

Jonathan Huberdeau
The Florida Panthers drafted Jonathan Huberdeau 3rd overall in 2011. He won the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year for the 2012/13 season. I sorta like this card with Huberdeau portrayed in his hockey gear.

Zach Parise
Although his autographs hasn't stayed this nice, this card is from his rookies season, Parise still maintains once of the nicest signatures of any recent NHL star. He's played almost 700 games in the NHL since 2005. Parise is a former NHL All-Star, was captain of the New Jersey Devils and in 2010 help Team USA win an Olympic silver medal. His father, J.P., who recently passed away, was also a long time NHL star.

Brad Marchand
Living in Nova Scotia, I hear Marchands name all the time. He's a local kid and fan favourite and Halifax also has strong connections with Boston. He's played nearly 400 NHL games with Boston since 2009 and helped them capture the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Evander Kane
Evander Kane was drafted 4th overall by the Atlanta Thrashes in 2009 and jumped right into the NHL. He has played 361 games between the Thrashers and Jets since 2009. He was recently traded to the Buffalo Sabres. Although I was never a fan, I kind of like adding Atlanta Thrashes cards. They're the first team to go defunct during my recollection as a fan of the NHL. I was just a little young to remember Hartford or Quebec.

Justin Schultz
Justin Schultz was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks but didn't want to sign with them. In 2012 he was signed by the Oilers as a free agent and made hockey headlines across North America. The college star has played nearly 200 games with Edmonton over three seasons but hasn't emerged as the star some thought he would be.

Martin Jones
Martin Jones was never drafted but he was named the 2009/10 WHL goalie of the year in his last season of junior. He also helped Team Canada capture a silver medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships. He's entering his second season as LA's backup goalie. Playing behind Jonathan Quick, Jones was a member of LA's 2013/14 Stanley Cup winning team.

Frederik Andersen
Its interesting to note that while this is an official NHL rookie card, Andersen is pictured here in the AHL with the Norfolk Admirals. Andersen has played nearly 80 NHL games over just two seasons in Anaheim. The Denmark native was named to the 2013/14 NHL All-Rookie Team.

Mikhail Grigorenko
Russian forward Mikhail Grigorenko was drafted 12th overall by the Sabres in 2012. He was a scoring machine in junior but hasn't been able to translate that to the NHL level. He has scored 4 goals in 60 games with the Sabres since 2012.

J.T. Miller
J.T. Miller was drafted 15th overall by the New York Rangers in 2011. The centerman has played over 100 games with the Rangers since 2012. In 2013, he helped the USA capture a World Junior Championship gold medal.

Freddie Hamilton
Since making his NHL debut with the 2013/14 San Jose Sharks, Freddie Hamilton has played 20+ games in the NHL between San Jose and Colorado. He was traded to the Avalanche in 2015. His brother, Dougie, also plays in the NHL.

Shawn Lalonde
Shawn Lalonde has spend the last two seasons in Europe. He played 1 game in the NHL with the 2012/13 Chicago Blackhawks.

Ondrej Palat
A 7th round pick in 2011, Czech native Ondrej Palat has continued to surprise many with his solid NHL production. He's scored 120 points in just over 160 career NHL games. In 2013/14 he was named one of three finalists for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. He was also chosen to represent the Czech Republic at the 2014 Olympics.
Side note - I really like these NHL INK cards. Yet another reason I'll miss Panini cards. *Shakes fist at money hungry executives who control but don't care about this hobby.*

Jason Akeson
Jason Akeson has played 14 games with the Philadelphia Flyers since making his NHL debut during the 2012/13 season. He was never drafted but singed as a free agent after leading the entire OHL in scoring during his last season of junior.

Daniel Bang
An undrafted forward, Swede Daniel Bang signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators in 2012. He spent just one season in North America. Bang played 8 NHL games for the 2012/13 Predators but spent most of the season in the AHL.

Alexander Nikulin
Russian forward Alexander Nikulin spend three seasons in North America, mostly playing in the NHL. He dressed in two NHL games with the 2007/08 Ottawa Senators and one with the 2008/09 Phoenix Coyotes. He's spent the last six seasons in the KHL.

Olli Maatta
The Pittsburgh Penguins drafted Olli Maatta 22nd overall in 2012. He's already an effective blueline with the Penguins and in 2014, as 19 year old, he helped Finland win an Olympic bronze medal in Sochi.

Victor Rask
Victor Rask has spent the entire 2014/15 season with the Carolina Hurricanes. The rookie has scored a respectable 30 points in just over 70 NHL games. Playing with Sweden Victor Rask won a gold medal in 2012 and silver in 2013 at the World Junior Championships.

Kerby Rychel
Kerby Rychel was drafted 19th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013. He's played 5 NHL games with the 2014/15 Blue Jackets. His father, Warren, also played in the NHL.

Jozef Cierny
Jozef Cierny played one game in the NHL with the 1993/94 Edmonton Oilers. Some of these old certified Classic autographs don't show up very often and I think these are the last two from the set I needed.

Robert Petrovicky
Robert Petrovicky made his NHL debut with the 1992/93 Hartford Whalers. From then until 2001 he payed just over 200 games in the NHL. The 41 year old is still playing pro hockey in Slovakia.

Vladimir Ruzicka
Czech star Vladimir Ruzicka was drafted by the Maple Leafs in 1982 but didn't come to the NHL until 1989. He was a member of the 1989/90 Stanley Cup winning Edmonton Oilers. He was awarded a Cup ring, included in the team photo but did not qualify to have his name engraved on the trophy. He scored 39 goals and 75 points with the 1991/92 Boston Bruins. In the Olympics he won a silver medal in 1984 and a Gold medal in 1998. His son of the same name was drafted by the Coyotes in 2007.

Fred Hunt
This signature comes from a letter by Fred Hunt written while he was GM of the AHL's Buffalo Bisons. I sent the seller a best offer much lower than the asking price and to my delight it was accepted. Hunt played 15 games in the NHL with the 1940/41 New York Americans and 44 NHL games with the 1944/45 New York Rangers. He passed away in 1977 and this is the first time I've had the opportunity to buy his signature.

Lefty Wilson
Lefty Wilson was a trainer and pactise goalie for the Detroit Red Wings. He dressed as an emergency goalie in the 1950s with the Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Bruins. He passed away in 2002.

Brandon Segal
Between 2008 and 2013 Brandon Segal played 103 games in the NHL. He scored 11 goals and 22 points. Segal dressed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.

Peter Leblanc
Peter Leblanc played 1 game in the NHL with the 2013/14 Washington Capitals. The University of New Hampshire alumni was drafted by the Blackhawks in 2006. He has spent the 2014/15 season playing in Sweden.

Patrick Wey
Patrick Wey played 9 games in the NHL with the 2013/2014 Washington Capitals. He won 2 national championships in four season with Boston University. He has been injured most of the 2014/15 season.

Nate Schmidt
Nate Schmidt has played 65 NHL games over two seasons with the Washington Capitals. The former University of Minnesota All-American may get a certified autograph but until then this will do for the collection.

Chris Driedger
When I started putting together this mail post Chris Driedger was in the backup only category. He recently relieved Andre Hammond and saw some real NHL minutes, moving this card up to NHL player signature level.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Autographs #35 and 36 of this post go into my other hockey collections.

Brian Walsh
Brian Walsh played 5 games in the WHA with the 1975/76 Calgary Cowboys. He scored 2 assists. Walsh signed two blank index cards but didn't sign the card I made, which leads me to believe the picture wasn't right. I dug up the only other picture of Mr. Walsh I could find and made this one.

Melodie Daoust
Melodie Daoust was named to Team Canada's national women's team in 2011. In 2014 she helped Canada capture an Olympic gold medal. This is the first of many new certified women's signatures I'll be adding. I've had to wait unusually long for these cards to come down to my affordibility level. Team Canada cards tend to be well collected. Oddly, the regular autograph versions are rare and these patch/auto cards are selling cheaper than the regular autographs.

30 new signatures brings the grand total of unique NHL autographs to 4,309. Most of the autographs are from TTM requests. The only two cards from ebay are the two female signatures at the end of the post.

From 1917/18 to 2013/14 there have been a grand total of 7,134 people to play in an official NHL game. I've been able to acquire 4,294 autographs. That puts me just over 60% of everyone who has ever played in the NHL. I doubt I'll ever be able to get 100% due to the rarity of some of the early player signatures but at 23 I have a lot of time left to find the other 40%. Finding autographs for new players is easy but it will take many years to find some signatures of long deceased players from many generations ago.

Larry Courville
From 1995 to 1998 Larry Courville played 33 NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks. He's spent the last seven years as head coach of the ECHL's Reading Royals.

Mike Crowley
Between 1997 and 2001 Mike Crowley played 67 NHL games with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Dave Roche
Between 1995 and 2002 Dave Roche played 171 games in the NHL. He played with the Penguins, Flames and Islanders.

Ian Herbers
Ian Herbers played 22 NHL games with the 1993/94 Edmonton Oilers, 37 games with the 1999/00 Tampa Bay Lightning and 6 games with the 1999/00 New York Islanders. He's currently head coach of the University of Alberta's men's hockey team.

Doug Crossman
Defenceman Doug Crossman played over 1000 regular season+playoff games in the NHL between 1980 and 1994. He spent time with the Blackhawks, Flyers, Kings, Islanders, Whalers, Red Wings, Lightning and Blues.

Stu Kulak
Between 1982 and 1989 Stu Kulak played 90 regular season games in the NHL. He dressed with the Canucks, Oilers, Rangers and Jets.

Dan McCarthy
Dan McCarthy scored 4 goals in just 5 career NHL games with the 1980/81 New York Rangers. It looks like he signed the card with a bad pen then signed again with a better one.

John Johannson
A University of Wisconsin alumni, John Johannson played 5 games with the 1983/84 New Jersey Devils.

Dave Pichette
From 1980 to 1988 Dave Pichette played 322 regular season games in the NHL. The defenceman dressed with the Nordiques, Blues, Devils and Rangers.

David Mackey
Between 1987 and 1994 David Mackey played 126 regular season games in the NHL. He spent time with the Blackhawks, North Stars and Blues.

Chris Taylor
Between 1994 and 2004 Chris Taylor played 149 regular season games in the NHL. He dressed with the Islanders, Bruins and Sabres. Since 2013 he's worked as an assistant coach with the AHL's Rochester Americans. His brother, Tim, had a long NHL career.

Neal Coulter
Between 1985 and 1988 Neal Coulter played 26 games with the New York Islanders. He scored 5 goals and 10 points.

Jason Herter
Jason Herter was drafted 8th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1989. He only played one game in the NHL, with the 1995/96 New York Islanders.

Yves Bergeron
Yves Bergeron played 65 games with the WHA's 1972/73 Quebec Nordiques. He later played 3 games in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins. This request took almost three years to get back to me and I had marked it as a failure a long time ago.

Kevin Maxwell
Kevin Maxwell represented Canada at the 1980 Olympic games. He later played 66 regular season games in the NHL between 1980 and 1984. He played for the Minnesota North Stars, Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils. He's currently Director of Pro Scouting with the New York Rangers.

Gary Sargent
Gary Sargent was a star hockey, baseball and football player in his youth. He turned down 15 college football scholarships and an offer to sign with the MLB's Minnesota Twins in favour of a hockey career. From 1975 to 1983 Sargent played over 400 games in the NHL with the LA Kings and Minnesota North Stars. He was a star defenceman who had his career cut short by injuries. Sargent was named to the 1980 NHL All-Star team but injuries forced him to sit out.

Tim Young
Between 1975 and 1985 Tim Young played well over 600 games in the NHL. He scored 20+ goals in a season five times and spent a season as captain of the North Stars.

Eddie Johnstone
Between 1975 and 1987 Ed Johnstone played nearly 500 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He spent most of his career with the Rangers but ended his career with the Red Wings. Johnstone represented the Rangers at the 1981 NHL All-Star game.

David Van Der Gulik
From 2008 to 2015 David Van Der Gulik played 49 games in the NHL. He's dressed with the Flames, Avalanche and Kings.

Stephane Robidas
I waited and waited for Stephane Robidas to get a well deserved certified autograph but to no avail. Its difficult to name any other modern day NHL All-Star who has played almost 1000 regular season+playoff games who doesn't have a certified autograph. Either Robidas has been overlooked or he doesn't like signing for card companies.

Kris Newbury
Since 2006 Kris Newbury has played 79 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He's dressed with the Maple Leafs, Red Wings, Rangers and Flyers. He recently had his first certified autograph released with 2014/15 Upper Deck AHL. I'll be replacing this with one of those sometimes in the future.

Joey Mormina
Its too bad Mormina was using a dying marker as the autograph is a little light. Originally drafted by the Philly Flyers in 2002, Mormina spent four years at Colgate University. He played one game in the NHL with the 2007/2008 Carolina Hurricanes.

Earl Heiskala
Unfortunately the index card I had sent Heiskala featured a Flyers player that wasn't him. He signed a couple blank index cards and offered to sign another card if I sent him one. I just took of of the index cards he signed and made this one, which will do just fine for the collection. Heiskala played 99 regular season+playoff games with the Flyers between 1968 and 1971. He later spent two seasons in the WHA with the Los Angeles Sharks.

Carl Brewer
A trip home had me moving a few books around, between a some I found a couple old signed issues of the Hockey News. I knew I had them but forgot where they were. One was signed by Carl Brewer, the other by Ron Ellis. I have a certified Ellis autograph but I'm happy to add this Brewer to the collection. Defenceman Carl Brewer was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. He won the Stanley Cup three times with the Maple Leafs and was named to four NHL All-Star teams. He played a big role in NHL history not only as a player but was instrumental in getting retired players $40 million in US pension money from Alan Eagleson and the NHL in the early 1990s.

Derrik Pouliot
I have a binder full of junior autographs, mostly from Heroes & Prospects, Between the Pipes and old Classic releases. Six players from that binder recently made their NHL debuts. Defenceman Derrick Pouliot played 34 regular season games with the 2014/15 Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins had drafted Pouliot 8th overall in 2012.

Stefan Noesen
The Ottawa Senators drafted Stefan Noesen in the first round, 21st overall, in the 2011 NHL draft. He was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in the Bobby Ryan trade. Noesen played one game with the 2014/15 Ducks.

Slater Koekkoek
Defenceman Slater Koekkoek was drafted 10th overall by the Lightning in 2012. He played three NHL games with the 2014/15 Tampa Bay Lightning.

Keegan Lowe
Keegan Lowe played two games with the Carolina Hurricanes towards the end of the 2014/15 season. He didn't go unnoticed in his first NHL game, getting into two fights with Vinny Lecavalier. He's the son of former NHLer Kevin Lowe.

Matt Puempel
Matt Puempel scored 2 goals and 3 points in 13 games with the 2014/15 Ottawa Senators. He was a first round pick, 24th overall, by the Sens in 2011.

Tyler Bunz
Tyler Bunz spent most of the 2014/15 season in the ECHL. A string of injuries found him in the NHL and he played one period in net with the Edmonton Oilers. Bunz was drafted 121st overall in the 2010 NHL draft by the Oilers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Smith
Neil Smith played a couple seasons of pro hockey but is best know as his role in the front office of NHL teams. In the late 1980s he was an assistant GM with the Detroit Red Wings. In 1989 he was hired as General Manager of the New York Rangers and managed the club to a 1994 Stanley Cup championship. He remained with the Rangers until 2000.

Gord Titcomb
Gord Titcomb played 2 games in the WHA with the Toronto Toros during the 1974/75 season. He was also drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs but signed with the Toros because he had a better chance of making their roster.

Brianne Jenner
Brianne Jenner won an Olympic Gold medal with Canada at the 2014 Olympics. She plays college hockey with Cornell.

Jocelyne Larocque
Jocelyne Larocque was also a member of the Team Canada's Gold medal winning 2014 Olympic team. She's an University of Minnesota Duluth alumni.

A lot of the players I write to don't just send me autographs, I have gotten some great letters back as well. Rather than have some of these great stories gathering dust in my filing cabinet, I thought I'd share a few player's memories of the NHL's one time rival, the World Hockey Association. I hold a personal interest in the league and so when I write to an obscure player who once played in the WHA, I ask if he has any favourite memories or anything he'd like to share. Here are a few of the stories I've gotten back.

Ross Perkins
Perkins spent three seasons in the WHA. He played with the Alberta/Edmonton Oilers from 1972-75.

"Our 1st year in the league we were playing the New York team in Cherry Hill. It was a small rink, very old and run down. The ice was not even level. I remember one play where two players hit the boards about the blue line and the entire section of the boards fell over. It caused a delay but we finished the game. Not sure that they played many more games there!"

Bill Berglund
Goaltender Bill Berglund was largely a backup goalie in the WHA. He played five games with the New England Whalers but dressed as a backup in many more. Since 2001, he's worked with the Montreal Canadiens as a scout.

"A little background, I was in the Montreal Canadien organization, and pretty much moved between the IHL and the AHL. The World Hockey Association gave me a chance, especially with a local team like the New England Whalers. I played a total of 29 games over 5 1/2 seasons finishing up with Cleveland Crusaders after Cherry Cheevers returned to the NHL. I served as backup for about 158 games over that time. I did some 1st time things:
- Played 1st game ever played in WHA - an exhibition game in Roanoke, Virginia vs the Philadelphia Blazers.
- I surredered Gordie Howe's 1st WHA goal at the WHA extravaganza in Madison Square Garden.
- I played in the 1st game played at the Hartford Civic Center."

Pierre Viau
Defeceman Pierre Viau played four games in the WHA with the 1972/73 Chicago Cougars.

"I Don't remember much except the first encounter with Bobby Hull. I stopped one of his shots and it broke my shin pad!!!!"

Jerry Zrymiak
Zrymiak was a well travelled WHA player. Between 1972 and 1977 he played 155 games in the
Jerry Zrymiak
league, dressing with the Los Angeles Sharks, Michigan Stags/Baltimore Blades, Toronto Toros and Minnesota Fighting Saints.

"I joined the Los Angeles Sharks in the initial year of the WHA's formation. Prior to that I was playing senior hockey in Western Canada, a good league with many ex-pros.
WHA hockey was indeed a different style of hockey. Tough is a key word. Most of my first year was spent in Greensboro, NC in the Eastern League (talk about tough!) It was an 'eye-opener' for me. I survived and played for several more years.
I had the great pleasure of playing with Dave Keon and Johnny McKenzie in Minnesota with the Fighting Saints. I had a lot of fun with the Carlson brothers, aka the Hanson brothers in the movie Slap Shot. They were good guys, really tough, but they said that they were not as tough as their sister!
Playing against Gordie Howe and his sons was also a good memory."

Bob Roselle
Roselle played 1 game in the WHA with the 1975/76 Indianapolis Racers.

"After playing six years in the minors, I finished playing in Vienna, Austria. I moved back to London, Ontario after my year in Vienna and played senior hockey for the London Kings. That year they had a senior team in St. Johns, Newfoundland but there was no league there so they used to bring over teams for the weekend and play exhibition games. While playing over there, Doug Harvery, former Montreal Canadiean great, was the head scout for Indianapolis, liked what he saw and offered me a 30 day contract along with a player from Newfoundland, Glen Critch. That is how I ended up in Indianapolis."

Ross Smith
Smith played 15 games with the 1974/75 Indianapolis Racers. He was cast as Barclay Donaldson in the 1977 movie Slap Shot.
"I ended up with the Racers because Chuck Catto, the manager, moved there from St. Louis and offered me a contract. It is always a big thrill to play in the bigs against guys like Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe and J.C. Tremblay. I even fought Ted Green!
Being in Slap Shot was a real thrill; doing lines with Paul Newman.
But I would have to say getting a chance to play in the WHA was a dream. I had wanted to play in the bigs all my life while skating hours on outdoor rinks and riding countless miles in buses."

Frank Mahovlich and Titcomb
with the Toronto Toros
Gord Titcomb
A 1973 draft pick of both the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and WHA's Toronto Toros, Titcomb played two games with the 1974/75 Toros.

"One of my games was against Winnipeg where Bobby Hull & co. had the great line. I also have found memories of being called up from the Tuscon Mavericks when our season ended, to the Houston Aeros where I was on the practise squad for two months. We lost in the finals to the Winnipeg Jets that year. I didn't get into any games but It was still a great experience to be with the Howes etc. There weren't any injure so I didn't get a chance to suit up.
The Leafs offered me a two way contract but I signed with the Toros instead. Of course, they signed Paul Henderson and Frank Mahovlich after I signed in June so it made it a lot tougher for me to crack the lineup."

Mike Hobin
Hobin spent two seasons in the WHA. He played a total of 77 games in the league with the Phoenix Roadrunners. He scored a respectable 18 goals and 37 points.

"The most memorable thing that happened to me in the WHA was over a couple of games. We played an exhibition game in Oakland City against Houston. It was overtime and I went into the corner with Gordie Howe. Somehow, I come out with the puck and passed it to a teammate that scored the OT goal. I was never a dirty player and don't remember doing anything dirty to Gordie, but after the game I was talking to a friend on Houston named Steve West. West told me to watch out because Gordie 'has you number.' Not thinking anything of it, almost a month later we were playing in Phoenix against Houston. Sure enough I was back-checking next to Howe and 'BOOM' he hit me blindside with one of his famous elbows. Nose bleeding and seeing stars, I went to the bench and thought 'okay Gordie, not sure what I did but I guess we are even.'"

Mike Sleep
Over two seasons, Sleep played 22 games in the WHA with the Phoenix Roadrunners. In 1975 he was drafted by both WHA's Roadrunners and the NHL's NY Islanders.
"I grew up in Winnipeg, MB and played jr. hockey in Western Canada for the Westminster Bruins. My favourite memory is when I was called up with the Phoenix Roadrunners to play in Winnipeg, my hometown. Being a right winger, I played opposite Bobby Hull and was fortunate enough to score the winning goal in a 2-1 win in front of my parents, family and friends.
I chose the WHA over the NHL because the Phoenix Roadrunners offered me a three-year contract while the New York Islanders offered me a tryout. I chose the guaranteed money."

Rick Fraser
Rick Fraser
Defenceman Rick Fraser played four games with the 1974/75 Indianapolis Racers. His son, Jamie, recently played in NHL with the New York Islanders.

"I don't have any real memories only being there four games, I guess my first game against Gordie Howe was memorable. I had played against Mark & Marty growing up.
The Racers farm team was in Utica, New York, in the same league as the movie Slap Shot. As funny as that movie was, it was so real life. All that crap went on, it was crazy. Lot of good players, but a lot of goons."

Del Hall
Hall played nine games in the NHL with the California Golden Seals and then finished his hockey career with three full season in the WHA. Two of those were spent with the Phoenix Roadrunners.

"The fans in Phoenix were great. A lot of them were Canadians vacationing for the winter. There was just not enough local fans to support a WHA team."

World Hockey Association Autographs

These are my autographs of players who only appeared in the World Hockey Association and not the NHL. I really wish ITG would have made a WHA hockey card set before they were bought by Leaf. I think a WHA themed set would be a big hit among collectors. I still have a long list of players WHA only player autographs I need and a set would surely produce some unique signers. Unlike former NHLers, it can be hard to locate WHA players as not many people write to them. Especially the ones who never played in the NHL. Its also hard to find pictures of some of them.
If you don't know anything about the WHA then you should look into in. It existed as a rival to the NHL from 1972-1979 but experienced many difficulties. Legends like Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull spent a significant amount of time in the league. The Rebel League by Ed Willes is a good book written about the WHA.

53 new autographs brings the grand total of unique NHL signatures to 4,362

You may of noticed, I did update the blog's format a little

New: Follow me on Twitter!

Ron Stewart
Ron Stewart played 1,353 regular season games in the NHL between 1952 and 1973. He won the Stanley Cup 3 times as a Toronto Maple Leaf. He later returned to the NHL as a head coach with the Rangers and LA Kings. Stewart passed away in 2012 and this is his only certified autograph card. I also got my hands on a Sid Smith from the same set but that was just an upgrade, not a new autograph, so I won't be showing it off on this post.

Rick Martin
What a beautiful looking autograph Rick Martin has. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago at only 59. Martin was a 7 time NHL All-Star with the Buffalo Sabres and scored 50+ goals a season twice. He was a member of the famous French Connection line with Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert.

Mark Johnson
With this and the Eric Strobel in this post I now have a certified signature of every member of the 1980 USA Miracle team. Mark Johnson was one of the best players of the Gold medal winning team. He scored 500+ points in the NHL, was an NHL All-Star and served as captain of the Hartford Whalers.

Brian Engblom
Brian Engblom made his NHL debut in the playoffs with the 1976/77 Montreal Canadiens. The team won the Stanley Cup but with only 2 games played Engblom's name was left off the trophy. That wasn't the case in 1978 and 1979 when became a full time Canadien and won the Stanley Cup both years. The Defenceman was named to the NHL's 1982 All-Star team as a Hab. He later played with the Capitals, Kings, Sabres and Flames before retiring in 1987. He's currently a colour analyst for the Winnipeg Jets.

Doug Jarvis
Ironman Doug Jarvis didn't miss a single NHL game from 1975 to 1987. He won the Stanley Cup four times as a Montreal Canadien; 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979. In 1984 he was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward. In 1987 he won the NHL's Bill Masterton Trophy. Jarvis later won the Stanley Cup in 1999 and 2011 as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins.

Zdeno Chara
A six time NHL All-Star, three time Olympian, 2009 Norris winner and 2011 Stanley Cup winner, Zdeno Chara has a lengthy resume. The Slovakian has been captain of the Boston Bruins since 2011. For someone as notable as Zdeno Chara, he has very few certified signatures on the market.

Ilya Kovalchuk
Russian sniper Ilya Kovalchuk was drafted 1st overall by the Thrashers in 2001. He's a four time NHL All-Star, Olympic bronze medalist, 2004 Rocket Richard Trophy winner and former captain of the Atlanta Thrashers. The value of his stuff drops the longer he stays in the KHL and I was finally able to snap up his autograph for just a few dollars.

Henrik Tallinder
I've had my eye on this card for a while on COMC. The seller accepted my best offer and although I still believe I overpaid, I'm happy to find Tallinder's only certified autograph. Its limited to just 50 copies and they don't show up often. Henrik Tallinder played well over 700 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He dressed with the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils. In 2010 he helped Sweden win an Olympic Silver medal.

Marian Gaborik
Marian Gaborik has a ton of autographs on the market but with a fierce fan following, they aren't dirt cheap. The Slovakian sniper was selected 3rd overall by the Wild in 2000. He's a 3 time NHL All-Star and in 2014 won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Los Angeles Kings.

Jiri Fischer
From 1999 to 2005 defenceman Jiri Fischer played 300+ NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings. He won the Stanley Cup in 2002. His career ended suddenly when his heart briefly stopped during a game. He was forced to retire in the prime of his career.

Nicklas Backstrom
Swedish forward Nicklas Backstrom was drafted 4th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2006. In 577 career regular season NHL games with the Caps he's scored 572 points. He recorded 101 during the 2009/10 season alone. Backstrom has represented Sweden twice in the Olympics and in 2014, after some controversy, he won a Silver medal.

Drew Doughty
The Los Angeles Kings selected Drew Doughty 2nd overall in 2008. Widely regarded as one of the best defencemen in the NHL, Doughty won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. He also helped Canada win Olympic Gold in 2010 and 2014.

Kevin Klein
This is a personal favourite of mine because I've been looking for it for a long time. Its Klein's only certified autograph. Since 2005 defenceman Kevin Klein has played nearly 500 regular season games in the NHL between the Predators and Rangers.

Ryan McDonagh
Ryan McDonagh was drafted 12th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007 but was traded to the Rangers in the Scott Gomez trade of 2009. In 2014 McDonagh was named the 27th captain in New York Rangers history. That year he also represented USA at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Nicklas Jensen
What a horrible signature! Nicklas Jensen was drafted by the Canucks in the first round of the 2011 NHL draft. He's played 24 games in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks since making his debut for the 2012/13 team.

Mark Barberio
Mark Barberio is an offensive minded defenceman who lead the AHL in points by a D man in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. He was a league All-Star both seasons. Since 2012 he's played 100+ games in the NHL with Tampa Bay.

Reto Berra
Reto Berra was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2006 but didn't come to North America until his rights were acquired by the Calgary Flames in 2013. The Swiss goalie has played 50 NHL games between the Flames and Colorado Avalanche. He played in the 2014 Olympics with Switzerland.

Ben Hanowski
Ben Hanowski was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins but made his way to Calgary in the Jarome Iginla trade. The St. Cloud State alumni has played 16 games with the Flames since 2013.

Greg McKegg
A third round pick of the Leafs from 2010, Greg McKegg has played 4 games with Toronto since making his debut with the 2013/14 club.

Chris Tierney
A 2012 second round pick, Chris Tierney played 43 games with San Jose in his first season in the league, 2014/15.

Stanislav Galiev
Stanislav Galiev played two games with the Washington Capitals at the very end of the 2014/15 season and scored one goal. The Russian was drafted in 86th overall by the Capitals in 2010.

Ryan Hartman
A 2013 NHL first round draft pick, Ryan Hartman played 5 games with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2014/15 season.

Chad Rau
Originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005, Chad Rau spent four years at Colorado College before being signed by the Minnesota Wild as a free agent in 2010. He scored 2 goals in 9 career NHL games with the 2011/12 Wild. This particular card is notable for being Rau's only certified autograph.

Elias Lindholm
Elias Lindholm was drafted 5th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2013. He's already played 139 games in the NHL. His father, Mikael, briefly played in the NHL with the LA Kings.

David Broll
David Broll recorded one assist in five career NHL games with the 2013/14 Toronto Maple Leafs. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2015 but has yet to dress with the club.

Linden Vey
Linden Vey made his NHL debut with the 2013/14 Los Angeles Kings but didn't spend enough time with the team to earn his name on the Stanley Cup. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in the summer of 2014 and spent entire 2014/15 season in the NHL with the Canucks. He's played almost 100 games in the NHL.

Radko Gudas
From 2012 to 2015 defenceman Radko Gudas played 125+ NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was recently traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. Gudas represented the Czech Republic at the 2014 Olympics.

Darcy Kuemper
Before Deven Dubnyk stole the show Darcy Kuemper was the hot goalie in Minnesota. He's played over 60 games with the Wild since 2013.

Patrick Bordeleau
Forward Patrick Bordeleau was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in 2004. He spent a few years playing pro before making his NHL debut with the 2012/13 Colorado Avalanche. Two different injuries limited him to just one hockey game during the 2014/15 season.

Marek Mazanec
Czech goalie Marek Mazanec has played 27 games in the NHL with the Nashville Predators since making his NHL debut during the 2013/14 season.

Connor Murphy
The Coyotes drafted defenceman Connor Murphy 20th overall in 2011. Since making his debut with the 2013/14 Coyotes he's become an NHL regular and has already played 100+ games in the league. He recently won a bronze medal with Team USA at the 2015 World Championships. His father is former NHLer Gord Murphy.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau
Since 2013 Jean-Gabriel Pageau has played over 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators.

Dylan McIlrath
Drafted 10th overall in 2010, Dylan McIlrath has played just three NHL games with the New York Rangers. The 6.05' defenceman is a tough customer and continues to develop.

Tanner Pearson
Los Angeles' first round pick of the 2012 NHL draft, Tanner Pearson made his NHL debut during the 2013 NHL playoffs. He scored four goals and 12 points in 24 games during the 2014 playoffs as the Kings captured the Stanley Cup.

Joey Hishon
Joey Hishon was drafted 17th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2010. He made his NHL debut during the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. He played over a dozen games for the 2014/15 Avalanche. Hishon missed nearly two full years of hockey due to concussion related problems since being drafted, it seems his autograph may have been affected...

Michael Bournival
Michael Bournival captained the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 2012 Memorial Cup championship. He's since played over 100 regular season+playoff games in the NHL with the Habs.

Will Acton
An undrafted forward, Will Acton spent four seasons at Lake Superior State University before being signed as a free agent by the AHL's Toronto Marlies. Acton later signed with the Oilers and from 2013-2015 he played 33 games in the NHL with Edmonton. His father, Keith, was a long time NHLer.

Phillip Danault
Chicago's first round pick of the 2011 NHL draft, Phillip Danault played two games with the club during the 2014/15 NHL season.

Andrej Nestrasil
I remember watching Andrej Nestrasil when he played for the Prince Edward Island Rocket. The 2009 Detroit draft pick made his NHL debut with the 2014/15 Red Wings. He played 13 games with Detroit before being claimed off waiver by the Carolina Hurricanes. Nestrasil was given a bigger role in Carolina and played 41 games for them, scoring 7 goals and 18 points.

Nicolas Deschamps
The Anaheim Ducks drafted Nicolas Deschamps 35th overall in 2008. He was later traded to the Maple Leafs and then the Capitals. He made his NHL debut with Washington in 2013/14, playing three games with the club.

Petr Straka
Czech Petr Straka was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2010 but was never signed by the team. In 2013 the Philadelphia Flyers signed Straka to a three-year deal. He recorded two assists in three NHL games with the 2014/15 Flyers.

Duncan Siemens
Duncan Siemens played one NHL game with the Colorado Avalanche towards the end of the 2014/15 season. The defenceman was drafted 11th overall by the Avalanche in 2011.

In 2014/15 Adam Lowry played 80 regular season games with the Winnipeg Jets in his first year in the league. He scored 11 goals and 23 points as an NHL rookie. His father, Dave, played over 1000 games in the NHL.

Rob Collins
From 1998 to 2002 Rob Collins played for Ferris State University. The undrafted forward was signed by the New York Islanders in 2003. He played 8 career NHL games with the 2005/06 Islanders, scoring one goal and one assist.

Brad Schlegel
Defenceman Brad Schlegel played 55 regular season+playoff games in the NHL between 1991 and 1994. He played for the Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames. He's most notable for being a member of Canada's 1992 and 1994 Olympic hockey teams. He brought home a silver medal on both occasions.

Christian Tanguay
Christian Tanguay played two games in the NHL with the 1981/82 Quebec Nordiques.

Perry Turnbull
Perry Turnbull was the 2nd overall pick of the great 1979 NHL draft. He scored 30+ goals a season three times with the St. Louis Blues. Turbull played 600+ NHL games between the Blues, Canadiens and Jets. His son, Travis, has recently played in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres.

Gerry Meehan
Between 1968 and 1979 Gerry Meehan played 680 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He dressed with the Flyers, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Canucks, Flames and Capitals. He was captain of the Buffalo Sabres from 1971 to 1974. He returned to the Sabres after retiring as a player and from 1986 to 1993 served as the Sabres' general manager.

Al Johnson
Al Johnson played two games for the 1956/57 Montreal Canadiens and then 100+ games for the Detroit Red Wings between 1960 and 1963. He scored 21 goals and 49 points in 105 career NHL regular season games.

Chick Webster
John "Chick" Webster played 14 NHL games with the 1949/50 New York Rangers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On top of the 53 NHL autographs I've also got an Olympian and six NHL backups to show

Eric Strobel
Eric Strobel was a member of the famed 1980 USA "Miracle" Gold medal winning team. He was a great hockey player and was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres but never made it to The Show. After just a handful of games with Buffalo's AHL team Strobel retired from the game in 1980 to pursue other career options. His father, Art, briefly played in the NHL with the NY Rangers in the 1940s.

Johan Gustafsson
Johan Gustafsson dressed as a backup goalie 9 times with the Minnesota Wild between 2013 and 2014.

Mike Kennedy
Between 1994 and 1999 Mike Kennedy played 145 regular season games in the NHL. He scored 16 goals and 52 points while dressing with the Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders.

Yan Kaminsky
From 1993 to 1995 Russian forward Yan Kaminsky played 28 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He played 1 game with the Winnipeg Jets and the rest with the New York Islanders.

Chris Luongo
From 1990 to 1996 Chris Luongo played 218 games in the NHL. The defenseman was a member of the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders.

Todd Flichel
Between 1987 and 1990 Todd Flichel played 6 NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets and recorded 1 assist.

Darcy Martini
A Michigan Tech alumni, Darcy Martini played 2 NHL games with the 1993/1994 Edmonton Oilers. He was a 1993 AHL Calder Cup champion with the Cape Berton Oilers.

Scott Morrow
Originally drafted by the Hartford Whalers in 1988, Scott Morrow played 4 NHL games with the 1994/1995 Calgary Flames.

Shawn McCosh
Forward Shawn McCosh played 4 NHL games with the 1991/1992 Los Angeles Kings and 5 games with the 1994/1995 New York Rangers.

Yvon Corriveau
Yvon Corriveau played over 300 regular season+playoff games in the NHL from 1986 to 1994. He played with the Washington Capitals, Hartford Whalers and San Jose Sharks.

Ken Leiter
A Michigan State University alumni, Ken Leiter appeared in over 150 regular season+playoff games in the NHL. He spent most of his career with the New York Islanders from 1984-1988 but ended his career with the 1989/90 Minnesota North Stars.

Russ Anderson
Defenseman Russ Anderson played over 500 games in the NHL between 1976 and 1985. He saw time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers and Los Angeles Kings.

Luc Dufour
From 1982 to 1985 Luc Dufour played 167 regular games in the NHL, scoring 23 goal and 44 points. He played with the Boston Bruins, Quebec Nordiques and St. Louis Blues.

Perry Miller
Perry Miller spent 3 seasons in the WHA before making the jump to the NHL in 1977. Between 1977 and 1981 the defenseman played over 200 games with the Detroit Red Wings.

Lorne Henning
I have a couple TTM requests sent to Lorne Henning but still no reply so this will do nicely for now. On top of the 61 NHL autographs I also added 4 'other' hockey signatures to my collection.
